  • Ok, sounds like a good trip then! You will almost definitely have mud in May, but if you're in the High Peaks it won't be as bad as in the lowlands. I think your best bet would be a Great Range traverse. You'll certainly have many of the best views and most epic peaks of the Adirondacks. My suggestion is that you contact ColdRiverRun on here. He recently completed a GR traverse, and can tell you about his experiences. I've never done one, only climbed a few at a tim, so contacting him is my suggestion (his name's Cory, btw).

I hope you have an awesome time, it sounds like a great trip!
Big Peaks, eh? Well you're really experienced in outdoor life, so really anything would be fine for you. If you're planning on hiking all 46, then I might recommend an easier hike at first so that you can save the climactic hikes for your finish. If this is just a let's visit the park and hike some peaks kind of thing, then you might want to do a bigger, longer trip. How long would you be up here? Would it be for a weekend? If you want a challenge, I would suggest a Great Range traverse. A friend of mine just did one, 32 miles in 15 hours, and it looks like it would be a blast.

If you give me some more details about your length of stay, and how much you want to be challenged, I might be able to advice more.

I'm was given an internship with Wilderness Inquiry in Minnesota from May 31st through mid-August. I'll be co-leading canoe, kayak, backpacking, and camping trips, as well as helping the management of their gear warehouse. Do you know Minnesota? Any good advice for wilderness experiences?
Hey, that'd be great! I might not be here, though, because of my internship in Minnesota. But please keep me posted.

Just keep in mind black fly and mud season! You'll be near the middle of black fly and mud season. But as far as good hikes, I can certainly recommend something if you'd like. Just let me know what you have in mind. A High Peak, a longer thru-hike, a river/lake paddle?

    Sounds good!
Hey Ryan. Do you have some sort of blog or trip report about your AT thru-hike? I'm considering doing it after I graduate, and I figured I'd get a head-start on research and reports.
Excellent. Sorry about the 1 day off from work, that's a bummer. Wow, Seattle man, that's intense! Well if that comes about I wish you well, good deal!!
The whites are spectacular, these mountains have given me great inspiration. I am about halfway through the 48, but I have thru-hiked the AT(which should run through the ADKS in my opinion.) My work schedule is kinda weird, I only get 1 day off at a time usually (retail for ya). However, if I ever get a window I will try and get out there to NY. For now, if you ever get a chance to come out here, I would be happy to show you some awesome hikes. Pretty excited right now too, my girlfriend and I are talking about moving out to seattle this spring. Hello Cascades and Olympics!!
Nice. I'm an ADK kid for sure, so if you want to break into the Dacks, I'll be happy to help!
I would love to get into the Whites at some point. Right now the drive is a little too long for me, so I'm still focusing on the Adirondack 46. I go to school 6 hours away from the NH border at least, so it's even harder.
When I have an opportunity to head up to the Whites, though, I'll deff give you a holler! I really know nothing about them, and have only been a few times.

    Have a great weekend!
yeah, I am always looking for a hiking partner for sure. Most of the stuff I do is in the whites and in northern maine but I have really wanted to get out to the Adirondacks for a while now, never been. I am going to try for the Hancocks on friday or the Osceolas. Welcome if you can make it.
p.s. why don't you post a thread about the new winter travel group. i know there are plenty of winter travelers on here.
Well better to be gone...if you're outdoors...then sitting on your butt on VFTT :p

Looks like you're around my age. If you ever want a hiking partner, let me know. Do much in the Adirondacks?
yeah its funny, i've been a member for so long too. Just been gone a lot of it. Great to finally have a friend, thank you.
You don't have any friends, but you started an awesome group, want to be my friend? :D
