a while back someone posted a map program that you could lay out a course and it would calculate the distance. anyone have that link ?

Don't know about the link, but a number of digital mapping programs have the capibility. Eg. National Geograpic TOPO!

Found another online tool, similar to USATF but it also gives you an elevation profile of your route and lets you export a Google Earth file for 3D view.
Like USATF it does also show some trails.

I purchased my GPSr as a package and it came with Garmin Mapsource TOPO. It has many trails listed on it and has that function plus I can download the maps and routes to my GPS.

The Microsoft Streets & Trips software is another option. It allows you to highlight a route and it will show you distance as you draw. It also has a bunch of other cool features (restaurants, hotels, etc.). IMO, it's significantly better than mapquest, google, etc.
