Mt. Cardigan (NH) Elwell Trail

Great to see the lost trails site is back up. It got me thinking of a non-WMNF trail which I hear is going away. The Elwell trail.

The AMC guide suggests treating this trail which connects Cardigan to Newfound Lake as if it were abandoned... that it is mostly a bushwhack after the power lines. I took this trail back in the early 80's, and would love to give it another go.

Anyone been by this way recently?

I've found the Elwell Trail out to Mt Oregon tricky to follow in places but certainly not abandoned. I noticed there has been some maintenance in the last few years (think it's Camp Mowglis doing the work) but the trail does have many sections that could use attention. I usually hike out to Mt Oregon once a year but haven't been yet this year so my information is about a year old. Usually stop at the Cu Na Mara for a brew after hiking this area.
