Road Closure RT23A (Catskills)

From the DOT website: "On Tuesday, May 30, Route 23A will be closed to all through traffic (including pedestrians) between O'Hara Road and White Road beginning at 7AM until 5:30PM on Wednesday, June 21 (estimated). During the closure, there will be two signed detours. Motorists can use New York State Thruway Exit 21 (Catskill), take Route 23A west, turn north onto State Route 32, turn west on State Route 23, and turn south onto State Route 296 to re-join Route 23A in Hunter. Motorists can also exit the Thruway at Exit 19 (Kingston), take State Route 28 west to State Route 214 north and rejoin Route 23A in Tannersville."

This the the section between Palenville and Tannersville. Take this into account when making your travel plans. Another option is to take Platte Clove Rd. .

(including pedestrians)

How about hikers on the Long Path which crosses and uses part of Rt 23A west of the Palenville (Rt 32A/Rt23A intersection)?

Long Path alternative. There is a historic suspension foot bridge in the village of Palenville. It was mentioned in this previous VFTT post. The "cool stone church" that Warren mentioned in the post is at the cross hairs of this map. The bridge is open to public use based on legal provisions written into the private property deeds. This newspaper article describes the effort to create public parks near the bridge. Two old postcard pictures of the bridge are at the bottom of this page. If for some reason the suspension bridge is not open, one could hike through Palenville using the bridge on Woodstock Avenue, which would not add much distance to the hike.

Kaaterskill Falls trail. The trail will be inaccessible from 23A. The falls could be accessed from the Escarpment Trail, via a whack down the badly eroded and abandoned trail south of the falls (originally part of the Escarpment Trail). There is also access (but no immediate good view of the falls) from the end of Laurel House Road. Use extreme caution if you attempt to cross the stream above the falls. There is a large downed log about 0.1 miles above the falls which spans the creek and is fairly safe to cross. The better option is to approach from the Escarpment Trail (trailhead on Schutt Road).

North Lake State Park access The normal route into the park is on County Route 18 from the hamlet of Haines Falls. During the road closure the access to the park will be the O'Hara Road mentioned in the DOT notice. This should be obvious to anyone approaching from the west.

thanks again for setting me straight :D , I need to learn how to read someday. I will print this post out for future reference becouse the way the bugs are this year :( I will be spending more time down south.

FYI - the closure is to repave the road (it's all scarified (roughend) and the paving equipment was visible parked alongside the road yesterday), so depending on where they are working at any given moment, pedestrian/hiker crossing of the road may be quite feasible or utterly impossible (without melting your boot bottoms).

"Motorists can use New York State Thruway Exit 21 (Catskill), take Route 23A west, turn north onto State Route 32, turn west on State Route 23"

 Why would DOT send you from Exit 21 all the way down to Route 23a and back up on Route 32 instead of just going west on Route 23 from Exit 21????

This DOT routing only makes sense if one had some other reason for traveling the section of 23A east of Route 32. You are correct that the most efficient routing from Thruway exit 21 would be to take NY Route 23 west. That is also the detour recommendation posted on the Hunter Mountain website:
  • If you are traveling from the south, use Thruway Exit 19 (Kingston) and Rt. 28 west to Rt. 214 north (in Phoenicia) to Hunter.
  • If you are traveling from the north, use Thruway Exit 21 (Catskill) and Rt. 23 west to Rt. 296 south (in Windham) to Hunter.
  • If you cross the Hudson River from the east at Hudson/Catskill, follow directions as if coming from the north (above).
In addition to the Route 23A closure in the Kaaterskill Clove, the DOT and Hunter Mt websites also mention that Route 23A in the village of Hunter is under construction from about Scribner Hollow Road to the Jewett town line with alternating one-way traffic in place from 6:30AM to 6:30PM each day. This construction will continue throughout the summer. The Hunter Mt site suggests: "Consider using Ski Bowl Road and Riverside Drive to bypass the construction zones." Ski Run Road is accessed from Route 214, about 0.75 miles south of the junction with Route 23A. Riverside Drive is a western extension of Ski Bowl Road to Bridge Street (the western most bridge over the Schoharie Creek in the village of Hunter).
