I've just finished uploading my pictures from the Columbus weekend. Now I have to write some detailed trip reports, which will take me a while (being the verbose guy that I am).

While you are waiting for that, here is some fun. There are 7 photos of mystery mountains in the Great North Woods. Guess the name of the mountain and where it was taken from. Some shots have several peaks - guess them all.

Some are pretty tough. They're all tough if you are not familiar with the area. If that's the case, what are you waiting for - get on up there.

Post your guesses in this thread.

Rules: 1) don't look at the other albums for hints 2) if you hiked with me and we talked about any of these peaks, you're ineligible for that peak (but you can tell if no one else figures it out after a while).

A real tough one - 3 mountains with assorted peaks - anyone?

Another tough one. Maybe Roy knows?

Won't even try, there's gazillions of similar peaks in Pittsburg. If Spencer can snag a recent airphoto he could identify it from the log yard.

Funny you mention Spencer. I actually asked him about this very peak. He said he has a site in the area but when he's in "work mode" he doesn't think about peak bagging. Yeah, sure.

Sorry, No. 1 is something else.

Here are some hints:

1) I took all these pictures from NH, but most of the peaks are not in NH.

2) I peak is in Vermont, 1 is in Canada, 4 peaks (or groups) are in Maine and one group spans NH and Maine.

3) All but one are on lists being bagged by VFTTers.

Guess on # 4.

It is from Magalloway.

And Diamond Ridge is closer.

then
North Stub Hill, Stub Hill and Bosebuck Mt in the back

And partial view of Aziscohos Lake

YES! And I thoght that was the hardest one, it's the first to go down.

The answers

It's been a week and I expect no more guesses, so here are the answers:

Mystery Mountain No. 1

This is Mont Megantic in Qubec. The two peaks on the right are St. Joseph and Victoria. Photo was from boundary peak Trumbull (3277' aka Snag Pond). All 3 peaks are on the Qubec 1K list that our friend Oncoman is chasing. Hint: the low valley in the forground with the small town (Notre Dame des Bois) is a tip-off that it's in Canada. Megantic is alone and not part of any range. And the country side is much flatter on the Canadian side of the border than in Maine or NH.

This is Barker Peak on the left and Twin Peaks on the right. Both are in Maine and are near the boundary. Photo was from the boundary peak Trumbull (3277' aka Snag Pond). Both peaks are on the NE 3k list being pursued by several peakbaggers from this site.

Mystery Mountain No. 3

C'mon, how could you folks not know this one? It's Vermont's Monadnock taken from the NH side of the Comnnectcut just south of Colebrooke. Another NE 3K.

Mystery Mountain No. 4

spongebob got it exactly right. There are 5 NE 3Ks in the picture: 2 Diamond Ridges, 2 Stubbs and Bosebuck, seen from the tower on Magalloway.

Mystery Mountain No. 5

OK this was hard. It's not on any regular list (but it's on my "Boundary benchmark peaks" list). It's Bowman Hill, about 2 miles south of the border in Maine, but close to the NH line. Photo was from the boundary peak Trumbull (3277' aka Snag Pond). Roy (in an email) got this after a small hint.

Mystery Mountain No. 6
MM_No_6.thumb.jpg

These 3 boundary peaks are West Saddle Hill on the left and East Saddle Hill on the Right with Marble Mountain tucked under East Saddle Hill. It's interesting how Marble is dwarfed by the two Saddles. All are in the Maine section of the boundary. Photo was from the boundary peak Trumbull (3277' aka Snag Pond). all 3 peaks are on the NE 3k list.

Mystery Mountain No. 7

el-bagr got this right with his cryptic answer. It's Rump Mountain in Maine taken across the Second Connectcut Lake. The lake was drawn down quite a bit and so lots of rocky shore is visible. Another NE 3K.

OK here's one last chance:

One last Chance

Now I know lots of folks must know this. Every one is elligble. What peak is is and where was the photo taken from?

Magalloway from the western shore of 1st conn lake near where rte 3 runs right along the lake?

I'd guess Magalloway, across First CT Lake, taken from near Rte 3, where it curves sharply to the east. BTW, only the northern peak of Diamond Ridge qualifies as a 3k peak.

Yes and yes. You guys get to share the prize!

And the prize is --- an escorted trip to the west peak of Prospect Hill on New Year's day, 2007. (You escort each other :D )
