Need info. on Vermont Seneca Pks

On studying Topozone map http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=44.7043&lon=-71.79405&size=l&u=0&datum=nad27&layer=DRG25 I see 5 Seneca peaks:

3174' main pk to south

3160'+ pk to east with 320' of clean prominence

3049' pk to north with 200' of clean prominence

3017' middle pk with only 177' of clean prominence

3000'+ pk but with only 80' of clean prominence

By my book only the first 3 pks need to be bagged, but I may be wrong if only 100' of prominence is required.

Please advise,

Oncoman For what it's worth before I received a copy of the 770 list I created my own list using Topozone and a 200 foot col rule. I was bored one day

When receiving the 770 list I checked mine against it and I had missed only three of the, 109 I think, 3K mountains. The 770 list had one or two where I did not see a 200 foot col unless you add a half contour line. Since there is no "official" list I am of the belief you can include whatever RULE you choose. As the generally accepted norm is 200 feet I stuck with that.

As for Seneca Mountains, both the 770 and the independant list I created contained the first three you have listed 3174 3160 and 3049 neither list counted the others. The USGS maps shown on Topozone refer to the entire mass as simply Seneca Mountains without naming the various peaks. For clarity when making my list I included something the 770 folks did not. I noted the longitude and latitude references so I could easily locate a specific mt. Again as none are named I noted them as follows,

Seneca Mt South Peak 3174 44.694-71.803
Seneca Mt East Pk 3160 44.697-71.775
Seneca Mt North Peak 3049 44.712-71.801

I quickly got tired of writing down unnamed peak in the whatever range.

200 foot col rules for 3K list

Here's an attempt at copying the 3K list:

I don't understand "prominence" terribly well, but I gather it is height above the coll with its' nearest neighbor

I agree with Bill that those are the three peaks that "count". BTW, when South America Pond Road was gated, this used to be about a 30 mile car spot to do them all in a day, and most folks used to add a bw of East Mountain from the Seneca col.

I did those 3 weeks ago from South America Pond Road. Lot's of hunters around there. It's hard not to do the 3017 peak as it is on the way from the North Peak to the South Peak. After reading about your Pemi bushwhack traverse and other adventures, I think you ought to buzz over and do the northwest peak to make sure your conditioning is where it should be. It's mostly open woods with some scrub in a couple of the cols and on the east peak. Didn't find the jar on south peak (big flat open summit area).

I climbed them from near Lost Nation to the W with no car spot, finished early enough to climb Bald Mtn after. Conditions probably similat to present, road muddy and snow on trees.

And as I went from N to E and hit the main peak on the way back, I missed the 3017 peak (which to me has 117' clean prom) and will have to go back if rule is changed to 100' col.

Thanks ever so much everyone for your helpful comments. Will post my trip report. Heading to Vermont this PM and plan to do tomorrow AM East Mtn & then Senecas. Will do East first, than 2 or 3 Senecas depending on time & snow conditions. Have to be back to Montréal for 18h00.

By the way, for those who've done both the Senecas and the Bakers, how do these two bushwhacks compare timewise? Are they about the same, or are the Senecas a little quicker due to either distance or more open woods?

No comparison in vegetation wise, Senecas are much better going.
