I am amazed that Jefferson Notch Road is still open. Even so, I would never attempt it this time of year unless I was on foot

I would agree - if in fact it's still open. That road (and the Mt Clinton Rd) are the jurisdiction of the NHDOT. They may have closed the Notch portion and simply not notified the USFS.
