Most of the winter climbers seem to use ski poles for New England mountain trail peaks, but an ice axe works OK too. For bushwhacks, I find the ice axe is better for knocking snow off spruce branches, and for pulling yourself up steep inclines by hooking the axe on a tree trunk. I definitely recommend the ice axe for the winter Adirondack 4000 footers.
