Link for season dates.

The weather this weekend will be beautiful in the White Mountains. Remember that hunting for bear begins Saturday, September 1st. And, if you see someone in orange at the trailhead, they are most likely just fellow hikers. ;)

Happy Trails :)

Wow, September 1 to November is a long season for Bear? I'm no expert or anything -- why is bear season so much longer than say deer season?

It's not. Bow season on deer goes 9/15 to 12/15... about the same amount of time, just skewed forward by two weeks. Bow hunters are not generally a threat to hikers as they need to be pretty closer to get off a shot.

Don't know, but it might be that there are shorter seasons for different types of hunting, like bear dog season, archery season, etc.

Happy Trails :)

Edit: just followed the link further...different close dates for different areas and different hunting methods.

Agreed. Same goes for bear dog hunting, because the hunters just follow the dogs to a treed bear. There has been a general concensus on this site over the years that the threat to hikers is minimal, and that threat would be greatest off-trail and close to roads.

Happy Trails :)
