I'm wondering if I will need traction for a planned hike on Sunday to the ponds. Any advice will be much appreciated.

From the Waterville end -- very little snow

At least from the Waterville end, I would think traction aids would be entirely optional. As of this morning, at 1500 feet, there is approximately an inch of fresh snow down this week -- amounting to dust on crust, with a layer of older, occasionally icy snow underneath. The forecast calls for flurries or light snow tonight, but I don't think you will encounter a lot of snow along the way.

This could all change in a big way later on Sunday and Monday (just keep that in the back of your head).

If the forecasted big dump comes, you are likely to need snowshoes.

The trail is also shared by skiers, so they would particularly appreciate it if you used them (assuming of course that there is enough snow).
