Nice relatively easy bushwhacks for us to play with our new GPS toy.

Vly is short and sweet, basically blazed all the way to the canister. There is a wet spot about halfway up from the hunter's cabin (we parked there due to 4-wheel drive and the generosity of the hunters); be careful as it looks a bit like a trail crossroad, but it is a small pond! Consistent snow cover of about 2" from hunter's cabin to summit. Snow over loose leaves was pretty slippery in steep spots.

We used the road up Bearpen from behind the hunter's cabin as far as possible. The "No standing any time" sign is very funny. Our altimeter on the GPS indicated that the summit is a bit higher than the 3600' indicated on the websites we checked. More like 3615, I think. There are lots of thin ice spots over big puddles with about 2 inches of snow covering on that woods road.

No special equipment needed, but face protection from the cold would have been good. We tried Yaktrax for the first time and they broke! Snapped right in half. Mine and Flammeus's both. Very frustrating.

This hike completed # 17 and 18 for us. This winter bushwhacking is just great - No Nettles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No bugs! Great views!
