Bare ground, muddy near the bottom. Snow increased higher up. Well-packed by snowmobilers and quite icy.
The logging road branches numerous times. We made one mistake. Shortly after starting we came to a fork, the right had round wooden blazes nailed to the tree. Keep to the left here. Then in less than 100 yards you come to another fork. We went left here but it dead eneded forcing us to do a whack uphill quite a bit to find the correct road. Coming down from the summit we realized we should have kept to the right at that junction.
Our group wore a variety of traction aids - snowshoes, crampons, stabilicers, microspikes - and found them especially helpful on the descent. At around 2/3 of the way up we started occassionally postholing through the icy crust so most switched to snowshoes for the rest of the ascent.
