Algonquin and Wright 2-3-08

Date of Hike: 2-3-08

Trail Conditions: Beautiful! There is a coating of pellet-like snow (that doesn't really consolidate, it just moves around...) on top of a very firm pack. The trail up to the Wright junction had only one blowdown and a couple of icy spots. The rest of trail up to Algonquin remains in great shape. Above tree-line the rocks have a pretty good layer of crusty snow so we managed in snowshoes all the way. Visibility was extremely poor so we elected not to go over to Iroquois. Trail to Wright good up to tree-line. Crampons were needed from there up to the summit. There is a thin layer of snow on top of the ice, but not enough to support snow shoes. The ice is hard and tough to get good traction on.
