took 19-mile brook trail up to carter notch hut; trail was hard packed with one or two easily avoided blow downs; large student group staying at the hut for the weekend; tried snowshoeing up unbroken carter-moriah trail towards carter dome; trail was steep and covered in 1-2 feet of new powder; after about 15 minutes we turned around - maybe crampons would have been better, but in all that new powder footing would have been questionable; headed back 19-mile brook to carter dome trail, up to zeta pass; mt.hight trail was unbroken and 1-2 feet deep; no peaks bagged today but then the visibility was not that great either; still, an 11+miler left us plenty satisfied and hungry; tom & norm
