For those considering a hike this weekend, here are the trail conditions as of Thursday afternoon.

Mountain: Monadnock

Trail: White Dot

Date of hike: 2/21/08

Trail conditions: The rain earlier in the week washed away of some of the cover, so more rocks are showing through than last weekend. What remains is hard-packed snow and ice. The White Dot is well-broken along its entire length. The summit cone (above "Victoria Falls") is mostly bare rock.

Other trails: these are partial reports as seen from their junctions with the White Dot. Spruce Link, White Cross, and Cascade Link all well broken with hard packed snow. Old Ski Path: unbroken but hard-packed snow.

Special equipment: Traction devices are essential. If this weekend is warmer I would go with microspikes because of the mixture of ice and bare rock. If the temperature is low and the ice hard, I might still go with crampons.

Comment: Breath-takingly beautiful up there today.
