Mt. Mack, Mt. Klem, Rand Mountain via Round Pond Trail et al
Date of Hike: Saturday, March 22, 2008
Trail Conditions: Frozen granular, ice
Special Equipment Required: If doing Rand, full ice equipment, if doing just Mack, none required.
Comments:
Trailhead - continues to be plowed, however an active logging operation is now in progress for the first probably 2/10ths of a mile - this will become a mess once mud season hits.
Round Pond Trail to Round Pond - packed by snowmobile before last storm, barebootable. No blowdowns, water crossings no problem
Round Pond to Mt. Mack - packed by snowmobile, no blowdowns, water crossing doable, barebootable.
Mt. Mack to Mt. Klem - Icy in spots, I put on my MSRs. Ice in sunny areas is melting away. One minor blowdown.
Mt. Klem to Rand Mountain via Quarry Trail - very tricky on the ascent from the col, I needed my ice axe to get up the steep portion and used it for a minor self arrest when descending.
Mt. Klem to Round Pond - Snowshoes probably not a bad idea, as I was the first person on this trail in awhile, so there may be some postholing with warmer temps.
