Route: Kelley, Lawrence, Square Ledge, Old Mast
Below 1800' Kelley and Old Mast mostly dry trails under hardwoods, shallow snow under softwoods, barebootable.
Upper Kelley tough with soft deep snow by stream, deep postholes at times even with snowshoes. Steep eroded snow banks by water made for challenging crossings.
Deep snow all SL trail. 1st time ever used extensions on MSR shoes, generally stayed on surface after that. Stream crossings also tough. Found this lightly used trail hard to follow due to faint trail blazes. Fortunately a moose knew the way, followed his/her postholes up to 5' deep, and traced the path. Dry enough going up to the ledge, ravens seen but no sign of falcons.
On the way down, fresh bear tracks (not mine) in the moose prints following the much easier Old Mast.
Mild spring conditions, nice to hike in shorts and tee shirt again.
