I did a hike in the long lake area and was driven off the summit sunday by the flies. If you were to choose a area where the black flies were better right now, were would it be, northern catskills or adirondacks.

dak's or catskills?
I was in the Catskills on May 8-10 and the blk flies minimal and not biting, and no skeeters. If this helps. It was also lovely there and not too many people and I was on one of the most popular trails (Burroughs Range Trail)

Go with the Catskills. Just from what I read it sounds like the ADK gets a lot more in the way of Blackflies. The Catskills are hit or miss. Some days they are there and others nothing. When they are there, they are not bad.
