Trekked to Owl's Head from Lincoln Woods on 07/26/08. On the way out, did the Black Pond whack. We folllowed Papabear's advise to get above the mud and muck and followed a 345 degree course. Worked like a charm and brought us out west of the worst two crossings on the Lincoln Brook. If you spot the red blazes, avoid them, they bring you out to far to the east on the Lincoln Brook Trail.

The Liberty Brook crossing and the last two crossings of Lincoln Brook before the slide were negotiated without much problem. Slide turn off is marked with two large cairns and sticks. The slide was wet in places, but not to difficult to negotiate. We were able to generally follow the use path to the true summit.

On the way back we followed the trails all the way back. The two final crossings on the Lincoln Brook (before the Franconia Brook Trail) were only manageable by wading across. One was about shin depth, the second about knee height.

Lincoln Brook Trail was really wet (big surprise). Lots of mud.

There were a couple of streams running high along the Franconia Brook Trail. Our feet were already wet so we just slogged on through. Some appeared to be shallow and will likely dry up soon, others could have been navigated better if we were more concerned about dry feet

As we hiked out the Wilderness Trail, saw NH F&G officers out and several people that appeared to be a search party heading up the Osseo Trail. Not good.

Necessary gear: Waterproof boots, poles, compass, ability to deal with wet feet

Weather worked out great for us. Sunny all the way till we left Lincoln Woods lot. Saw lots of people climbing Owl's Head. 46 down, 2 to go.
