Started from South Meadows at 7:15 (Garden full at 6:50 am). Trails were wet and muddy but not too difficult to navigate. The snow has left the peaks for the time being but I have a feeling that won’t be the case for long. The leaves are definitely past their peak but the valleys still had a nice golden glow about them. The views were outstanding from every summit, what a perfect day for hiking. Met some really cool people, including BignSlow and a nice woman who just finished doing Kilaminjero. Made it to the Klondike trail head just before sunset. The full moon gave us enough light to do the 2 mile ascent then we had to resort to the headlamps for the 3+ descent to the car. This would have been a faster trip from the Garden but the South Meadows isn’t too awful as a plan B. Returned to car at 8:45 – 13.5 hours (11.5 hiking hours – 2 hours for peaks, visiting, water filtering and incidentals) An intense hike but very rewarding.

Equipment needed: Waterproof boots for a more pleasant hike, Gaitors if you have an aversion to mud - (We don’t : ) Lots of water – the only stream once you enter the peaks is between Haystack and Basin. We each drank 3 liters and it was a cool day.
