Trail Conditions: Loop using the following trails:
Wild River - Fine shape. No issues.
Moriah Brook - Muddy and mucky, hard to follow in a couple places. Water crossings were difficult and muck covered in snow resulted in mud up above my knee at one point.
Carter Moriah - Excellent shape. Ledges were wet but not very slippery.
Kenduskeag - Awesome trail. Enough snow to be very slippery in spots. The snow-covered bog bridges were especially slippery.
Shelburne - Great shape. Lots of dry leaves which were slippery at times. Needed to pay close attention to stay on this lightly used trail.
Highwater - Excellent shape.
Special Equipment Required: Poles were essential for me in these slippery conditions. Waterproof boots would have made my day much more fun!
Comments: This was an interesting way to see these two peaks. It was a long, fun day with just enough snow to make things slippery but not enough to make microspikes useful. This was my first time over Shelburne Moriah and this stretch is amazing. I never imagined you could be so exposed in the Carter range.
