Dear Fellow Climbers,

First and foremost ...the Grace Peak Committee hopes that you are with friends and or family for Thanksgiving. And please ...after you have stuffed yourself with pumpkin pie ...take a hike! :)

On September 13th, 2008 the Adirondack Mountain Club overwhelmingly
voted to support the Grace Peak Project. We have included that resolution below because the statement that ADK has made is outstanding for several reasons:

1. The 35,000 members of ADK have officially joined 6000 46ers in supporting the the goals of the Grace Peak Committee.
2. The ADK acknowledged that 46ers mutually support the ADK mission. That being the responsible education, recreation, and conservation in the Adirondack Park..
3. The ADK recognizes that the 46ers have funded various trail work programs and the Summit Steward program.
4. The ADK credits the 46ers with thousands of hours of volunteer trail maintenance.

The Grace Peak Committee thanks our wilderness brothers and sisters at ADK for their support .

We have been extremely successful in generating support of ADK chapters across New York State. Our educational presentation has reminded us that Grace and Russ were leaders in educating people of the history, lore and the mystique of the Adirondacks. Grace and Russ were visionaries, who spent their lives promoting the recreational use of our wilderness reserves.

The success of the Grace Peak project relies on “local” support. East Dix / Grace Peak and South Dix/ Carson Peak are within the jurisdiction of the NYSDEC / Dix Mountain Wilderness Area , but the summits also lie within the physical boundaries of the Town of North Hudson.
We respect the community of North Hudson and have agreed to assist them in a process of education. We believe that once they have had an opportunity to review and understand the significance of the contributions that Grace and Russ made to their community as well as ours, they too will see the worthiness of this project and decide to honor two TRUE BLUE humble people.

So many mountains, too little time,

RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF 46ER PROPOSAL
TO RENAME EAST AND SOUTH DIX MOUNTAINS

WHEREAS, the Adirondack Forty-Sixers have proposed to rename East Dix Mountain “Grace Peak” in honor of Grace Hudowalski, 46er # 9, and long-time Historian of the Adirondack Forty-Sixers.

WHEREAS, the Adirondack Forty-Sixers have proposed to rename South Dix Mountain “Carson Peak” in honor of Russell M.L. Carson, a charter member and past president of the Adirondack Mountain Club, and the author of Peaks and People of the Adirondacks, the first authoritative history of the Adirondacks.

WHEREAS, both Grace Hudowalski and Russell Carson pioneered in educating the public on how to properly use and preserve the wilderness character of the Adirondack Mountains.

WHEREAS, East Dix and South Dix were first identified by Bob Marshall by association with the highest peak in the range and were never intended to be the final names associated with these mountains.

WHEREAS, the Adirondack Forty-Sixers intend on petitioning the U.S. Board on Geographic Names to rename East Dix and South Dix “Grace Peak” and “Carson Peak” respectively, and have sought the support of various local governments and other interested and influential parties, including the Adirondack Mountain Club.

WHEREAS, the Adirondack Forty-Sixers have been very supportive of the Adirondack Mountain Club’s mission of responsible education, recreation, and conservation in the Adirondack Park, and have provided funding for the ADK trails program and summit stewards.

WHEREAS, the Adirondack Forty-Sixers have performed thousands of hours of volunteer trail work throughout the Adirondack Park.

NOW THEREFORE, the Adirondack Mountain Club supports the proposal by the Adirondack Forty-Sixers to rename East Dix “Grace Peak,” and South Dix “Carson Peak”; and recommends that the Board of Directors of the Adirondack Mountain Club support the Forty-Sixer proposal.
