Date of Hike:

Trail Conditions: The approach in was quite pleasant, about a half inch of crunchy snow. The lower section above the Grand Junction has some thick ice flows around the streams that really need traction to cross safely. The upper section is pretty hairy. The higher slabs and cracks are a mix of bare rock, black ice, black ice covered by powder, powder, deep snow, then bare rock again. All in the same sections! Plus the trail near the top requires care to follow.

Special Equipment Required: Traction. I carried both microspikes and crampons and used them both. A crucifix.

Comments: We did this hike because we wanted to do a hike not so far north but wanted something a little challenging. In the summer this must be an awesome hike and in the deep of winter there may be enough snow to make the conditions more predictable. For the descent we crossed over to Firescrew and down the Manning trail. The views were spectacular with clear skies, temps in the teens, and winds 40+.
