Bayle Mountain via Bayle Mountain Trail
Date of Hike: Friday, December 12, 2008
Trail Conditions: Slush, loose granular, spring snow, corn snow, ice, wet trail
Special Equipment Required: Light traction not a bad idea for up high
Comments:
Accessed Bayle Mountain Trail from west side of snowmobile trail (may want 4WD to get up Marble Road to that point). Cleaned up most of the blowdowns on that stretch, but numerous saplings leaning into the snowmobile trail. About 2-6" of breakable crust covered granular on that stretch. Snowshoes might have made it a little faster, but was only sinking an inch or two barebooting.
Bayle Mountain Trail was a blowdown mess, but all of them have been cut up and/or removed as of 4:00 PM today.
Trail was mostly covered in a corn snow down low, 1-4" or so.
The seasonally wet area below the summit was submerged, but a light bushwhack about 5 feet to the right of the trail (ascending) makes it a very easy water crossing.
Summit has an icy crust to it - will likely require light traction at this point (was above freezing when I did it barebootedly).
