ok, i know this has probably been discussed, but what is the 'preffered' method for sharpening these up?

I have some Grivel 10 points if the type makes a big difference in technique...

thanks!

;)

From the maker's instructions:

Sharpen the crampon's points with a hand file and never with a bench grinder or Dremel. Sharpen the front and back of the lateral points, not the sides. Front points must be sharpened on the sides. A very sharp point will be efficient on hard ice though it won't last as long.

A picture is worth?

This is my preferred method. Some may disagree.

File all 4 sides just enough to create 4 nice sharp corners

File the tip at a 45 degree angle from the inside.

This sharpening method is good for 10 point crampons that are used for hiking/climbing.
