Trail Conditions: Trail has seen a fair amount of traffic lately, especially at lower elevations. It is well broken out. About 4 inches of fresh powder begins around 3200 feet and the trail is pretty well drifted in . The final steep pitch up to the summit is icy.
There are several low flying noggin knockers (ouch) so keep your head up and eyes peeled.
Special Equipment Required: Snowshoes are fine until the final pitch. At first glance, it appears that snowshoes may be adequate but not for long. Crampons are required.
Comments: Success Pond Road is plowed from Berlin to the road for the Success Pond camps (about 10 miles). It is not plowed all the way through to Grafton Notch. Both Goose Eye and Notch Trails are accessible on this road with ordinary two wheel drive cars.
The Berlin end is not signed but begins at Hutchins Road. There is a sign that reads “OHRV Parking 1 Mile”across from the Success Pond Road entrance. The Goose Eye trailhead is 1/10 of a mile beyond the 8 mile marker and is on the right. The little spur road that leads to the trailhead is not plowed. Park about 200 feet beyond the trail sign and bushwhack straight in 200 feet to intersect the trail.
About a ¼ mile in, the trail breaks out on a logging road. It follows the road for approximately 500 feet to a white AMC sign that reads Goose Eye Trail with double arrows underneath. One might interpret the sign to mean that the route continues further down the logging road. It doesn’t. The trail picks up again at the sign and heads back into the woods. It’s easy to miss. From there to the summit, it is easy to follow with blue blazes.
