Trail Conditions: Hi Cannon: Minimally broken out when we started. It should be better now as at least two more hikers on snowshoes followed us. But, on the steep sections the snow is loose and traction is difficult. Kinsman Ridge: Well packed, but again, loose snow on the steep part; also ice on some rocks. Lonesome Lake: Very well packed all the way.
Special Equipment Required: Most of the way, snowshoes and poles. Barebooting was possible, but the snow is deep off trail. On the steep sections of Hi Cannon and Kinsman Ridge, some may prefer crampons going up and the rear-end express going down. Cold weather gear. Temps started around 8 degrees (f) and fell to 0 by noon.

Comments: John and I had attempted Cannon from the ski area lot last winter and were foiled by spruce traps near the summit. This route avoided that problem, but required the difficult steep sections on Hi Cannon and Kinsman Ridge, both of which were tough with the still loose snow pack. Resting in the ski hut at the summit was great. The scenery was marvelous, despite the cold. Time: 3.5 hours up, 2.5 down.
