Mount Moriah via Carter-Moriah Trail, in and back from Gorham...

Date of Hike: Wednesday, January 27, 2009

Trail Conditions: Trail is broken out reasonably well all the way to the summit. However, beginning after Mt. Surprise to the summit occasional drifts in the last day or so had wiped out the trail so we re-broke.

Special Equipment Required: While parts of the trail early on are certainly bare-bootable or Microspike-able, we wore snowshoes to help consolidate. After about 2500 feet, snowshoes are certainly recommended for flotation. We could see sections where some folks had barebooted parts of the trail and had post-holed/chewed things up a bit.

Comments: A great day in Pinkham Notch. Cloudy to start, but then great views with blue skies and sunshine as the day wore on. Very chilly and a bit windy.

We saw only one other person on the trail -- coming up, just shy of the summit, while we were headed down.

The Carter-Moriah Trail is well broken out south to the Carters but the Kenduskeag Trail north does not look broken out.

We opted to park in Gorham just off Route 16 and walk to the trailhead (via Washington and Mill Streets and then across the narrow suspension bridge over the Peabody River). At the trailhead, there's really only room for one car (maybe two) plowed out without parking in front of the house across the street.
