In case anyone is wondering what an avalanche crown looks like, this happened yesterday in the Ravine. Avy conditions that day were Extreme, a rarity for Tuckerman.

I saw that from the cam at Wildcat, wow! The ravine is really filling in nicely right now. -Mattl

I have a similar feature on my barn roof. I had never seen a description of that sort of thing before. I will take a picture tomorrow. The one on my roof is only a foot or so tall.

Wow! Not just recent conditions, either. Here's the caption to that picture:

"2009-02-24 Ripped out multiple layers of hard slab.

Notice the different layers in the big fracture line and the December rain crust that was the bed surface."

December rain crust!

You sure that crust isn't from that big warmup with rain from 3 weeks ago, on Feb 12th? Incredible to think of how much snow accumulates in there. -Mattl
