Hibbard Mountain, Wonalancet Hedgehog via Wonalancet Range Trail, Short Cut, Walden Trail, Lawrence Trail, Kelly Trail, Old Mast Road

Date of Hike: Tuesday, March 10, 2009

Trail Conditions: Spring snow, packed powder, mud, blue ice

Special Equipment Required: Snowshoes, perhaps traction

Comments:

About 1" remains from Monday's 4" storm. Found a blue Camelbak bottle on Kelly Trail, left at Ferncroft kiosk.

Ferncroft parking lot continues to be plowed.

Old Mast Road to Wonalancet Range Trail - well packed (to Kelly Trail junction and beyond, but not to Walden Trail), no blowdowns.

Wonalancet Range Trail to Short Cut Trail - numerous postholes leading up to steep ledge area. Broken out, but not consistently packed. Steep ledge area has blue ice under about 1" of new snow. A few blowdowns.

Short Cut Trail - I was the first person up this trail in awhile. Sidehill gets annoying after awhile on snowshoes.

Wonalancet Range Trail to Hibbard Mountain - broken out but not particularly well packed (sinking maybe 1-2" on snowshoes). A few blowdowns.

Wonalancet Range Trail to Walden Trail - broken out but not particularly well packed. A few blowdowns.

Walden Trail to Wonalancet Hedgehog - broken out but not particularly well packed.

Walden Trail to Lawrence Trail/Old Mast Road/Square Ledge Trail junction - broken out but not particularly well packed. I removed some blowdowns, but a few still remain. Scramble ledges mostly covered with snow (some underlying blue ice), but could still be tricky to ascend/descend. Square Ledge Trail and Old Mast Road not recently used.

Lawrence Trail to Kelly Trail/Oliverian Brook Trail junction - first person down this in awhile. Snowshoes sunk 1-2", so trail is 'broken out' but not well packed. Lawrence Trail had no sign of usage beyond junction (to Paugus). Oliverian Brook Trail looked well packed.

Kelly Trail - fairly well packed, a few blowdowns remain. Water crossings mostly open, but easily stepped over.
