Carters Traverse via Imp, Carter-Moriah, Carter Dome, 19-Mile Brook Trails

Date of Hike: Saturday, March 28 to March 29, 2009

Trail Conditions: Spring snow, packed powder, blue ice

Special Equipment Required: Snowshoes and Microspikes

Comments:

Imp Trail to ledge is well packed but microspikes essential for icy spots. Snow bridge intact for stream crossing 0.8 from the start. From the ledge to North Carter Trail the trail is well packed but snowshoes are essential due to soft snow.

Imp/North Carter Trails Junction to Carter-Moriah Trail is well packed but snowshoes essential due to soft snow. A few blowdowns.

North Carter/Carter-Moriah Trails Junction to North Carter - we broke this out, decently packed, a few blowdowns. Excellent views.

North Carter/Carter-Moriah Trails Junction to Middle Carter - we broke this out, decently packed, a few blowdowns. Excellent views after we descended Middle Carter and reached a short plateau.

Carter Moriah Trail to South Carter - we broke this out, decently packed, a few blowdowns.

Carter-Moriah Trail to Zeta Pass - decently packed but we kept our snowshoes on due to soft snow, a few blowdowns. On the descent below the summit cone it seems everyone traveling north on the Carter-Moriah Trail heading to South Carter is missing a sharp left turn due to snowshoe tracks that lead straight ahead. We took some branches and tried to block this incorrectly broken out path.

Carter Dome/Carter Moriah Trails Junction to Carter Dome - decently packed, a few blowdowns. Good views of Presidentials on the climb up since leaves are not on the trees.

Carter Moriah Trail from Carter Dome down to Nineteen Mile Brook Trail - decently packed with a few blowdowns. The descent gets very steep after the pulpit and between the snow off to the sides of the main trail allowing us to make small post-holes, wearing microspikes and holding on to trees we got down safely. However if this freezes up you would absolutely need crampons; and I'm not sure I would even want to try descending even with them on!

Nineteen Mile Brook Trail to Parking Lot - barebootable (I wore Microspikes). No blowdowns. About half the creek crossings are open, all easily done.
