What an incredible weather day on Sunday. Snow came through Sat and dropped snow on the west facing slopes of the Whites, but the Presidential Range blocked the moisture, so one drives up into Pinkham Notch from Gorham, and all of the Carters are mostly clear without snow, then the slopes of Adams and Washington on the west and north side are completely covered in snow, very cool. This casued an interesting effect..lots of people going to the ravine because it was so warm and beautiful at the base, but the weather went downhill fast. The temp went from 38 or so at the base down to the upper 20's at Hermit Lake and and mid 20's as one traveled to to the ravine. I know this can happen, but the difference from the base was staggering. Snow was slushy up to Hermit Lake, then icy with wind-blown new snow. The ravine was a complete whiteout, with drifted snow, very icy conditions, and 40-50 mile per hour winds. Seemed like a lot turned back. I skied the middle part of the Chute on the left side and found some drifted powder up there, outside the powder, it was very icy and hard to ski. Went down the ski trail on the way home, which was fantastic, but really opening up at the lower part.
