Trail Conditions: Because Zealand Road was still closed, we had to park in the winter lot, walk Route 302, and then walk the road to get to the trailhead. All was dry and easy until we got half way up the trail and into nasty spring stuff: postholey snow and slick ice. The snow was over a foot deep in monorail condition in places, but fairly easy to bareboot. The icy sections tended to be steep and hard to avoid.

Equipment Needed: Poles helped us balance on the monorail and boots/gaiters helped keep snow out of our boots when the occasional posthole happened. The icy sections were potentially dangerous without traction: MicroSpikes, Stabilicers or crampons. Snowshoes were not needed. Even wearing MicroSpikes, one of our hikers slipped on the descent and went for a (fortunately) short slide.
