Wildcat A, Carter Dome via Nineteen Mile Brook Trail, Wildcat Ridge Trail, Carter-Moriah Trail, Carter Dome Trail

Date of Hike: Saturday, May 2, 2009

Trail Conditions: Pu pu Platter

Special Equipment Required: Traction, maybe snowshoes

Comments:

Nineteen Mile Brook Trail - snow and ice free beyond Carter Dome Trail junction. Patchy snow perhaps about 1 mile past it, some consistent monorail over the last .5 miles up to the Wildcat Ridge Trail junction. Mostly bare ground with some patchy ice from Wildcat Ridge Trail junction to Carter-Moriah Trail junction. Some blowdowns, none hard to get by. Fairly wet above Carter Dome Trail.

Wildcat Ridge Trail - Very annoying (not too sturdy) monorail - comes up to a point in many places. Not too stable either, but there is some blue ice on either side in a lot of places, so I wore crampons. The slide crossing is almost half bare - didn't need the ice axe this time. Trail has melted enough now that the turn people have been missing is pretty obvious at this point. Heard that the Wildcat Ridge Trail from A to D is pretty rough monorail as well.

Carter-Moriah Trail from Carter Notch to Carter Dome - patchy snow and ice down low, then completely bare on the steeps. Annoying monorail shortly after vista, all the way to summit.

Carter Dome Trail to Zeta Pass - mostly monorail, not quite as bad as the monorail in the above trails. I removed a few blowdowns.

Carter Dome from Zeta Pass to Nineteen Mile Brook Trail - consistent snow ends perhaps a quarter of a mile below Zeta. From there to the upper water crossing, mostly bare trail with some patchy monorail. Below top water crossing, bare trail. Water crossings required getting boots wet.
