Pierce/Eisenhower/Monroe via Crawford Path

Date of Hike: 5-2-09

Trail Conditions: Bare ground up first quarter mile from trailhead, then the snow and ice begins. We strapped on microspikes soon after encountering slick conditions and left them on until we skirted around Eisenhower. Mostly exposed ground on the east side of Eisenhower heading towards Franklin & Monroe.

Lots of postholing on the Crawford Path between Pierce & Eisenhower; some “bottomless pit” postholing on the south side of Eisenhower. Good amount of melt-water puddling up in level areas and sluicing down the trail on the slopes….but not a problem with waterproofed boots.

Special Equipment Required: Microspikes.

Comments: The southern prezis were blanketed in thick, dark cloud cover in the morning, but things cleared up by the time we poked above treeline. We had long views in all directions by the time we tagged Monroe in late afternoon. Monroe was our first summit of the day; we bagged Eisenhower & Pierce on the return trip. Winds were stiff and steady most of the day….a sustained 15 mph….but temps were relatively mild. It was a great day to be out.

Met up with Andrew & Ruth about 30 minutes into the hike. All 4 of us reached the summit of Monroe together. ‘Ol Drew is a machine…

Had the grey jays eating out of our hands on Pierce.
