I just got back home today from a wonderful and productive week in that wilderness of timber and ponds and peaks and logging roads called western Maine. I was fortunate to visit Audrey and Pat at their cottage on Lake Mooselookmeguntic near Oquossoc Maine for a week of peak bagging.

Joining us were Marge, Julie (Cantdog) and Kris (Little Bear). There were lots of peaks bagged. I climbed 6 from the New England Hundred Highest (numbers 59 - 64 for me) and one from the Fifty Finest, Julie climbed 9 of the HH (81 - 89 for her), Audrey and Pat have long since finished the 100, Little Bear is (I think) somewhere in the 60s, and Marge, on Thursday on the summit of Cupsuptic Snow, finished her #100!

We did some routes new to us and had good weather for Maine (only one rainy day) and generally had a great time.

As for the bridge on Wiggle brook being impassable. We drove over it with a Suburban and Durango a few weeks ago, but things change I am sure. We had to use a spotter to get around the large rocks, but I figured this bridge held trucks full of logs and skidders and things, so even with the "list" is was pretty sound.
However, I did have a long conversation with the guy running the brush hog clearing the roads, and he drives in from the "other way". Up the other side of Little Kennebago lake. So I assume that gate is open now from what he was saying. I did not try this route myself, but it would be worth investigating beacuase as PB says, it adds at least 4-5 miles and I would bet even more than that.
 
Back before any of the Kennebago gates (or Wiggle Brook) were open to hikers, many peaks were approached up the Cupsuptic. For instance, I climbed Cupsuptic Snow from the SW up East Brook which also got 2 3K peaks. At that time it was listed as the 101st highest peak in New England and according to the register got climbed once every 2 years. Before walking 5 miles I would check out the Cupsuptic approach. That Bridge

A little more information on that bridge: We looked at the layout and yes, we might have been able to cross the span and drive around the boulders. However it is clear that logging trucks are not passing that way as of now. Looking at the underside shows the right hand I-beam has slipped off the wooden buttress (which looks all rotten) on the far end of the bridge, and the right side of the bridge is sagging with no I-beam supporting it. Pehaps a single Suburban or Durango wouldn't be the straw that breaks the camels back, but I wouldn't want to be the one that finds that out.

So if you go there, you will have to make your own risk/reward assesment. As for us, our schedule was not unduly affected. We did all our peaks and had a great week. On the plus side, the bridge being "out" forced us to change routes for two trips:

1) for Boundary we decided to drive up through Canada and go in from that side. A very good route choice! (report to come).

2) for Whitecap / NKD we went up the Bear Brook Road (approaches the col form the southeast), which is known as "Stan and Eric's route" within our group. Also a very good route choice (report to come).

So we are quite happy we did the routes this way, road walk or no road walk. But Roy's point is a good one. Be flexible and be willing to consider routes other than the current "standard" route. If someone checks out that road Roy mentions, let us know if it's open.

Chain of Ponds Snow

When I first talked to Audrey about going up to her cottage in Rangeley, she mentioned I might come up the weekend prior for the Arm-fest. This was a summit party for Arm's 100th and last of the New England Hundred Highest on Saturday July 10th on Baldpate Mountain. This wouldn't be possible since I needed to be in NYC till Sunday (at the least) and the best I could do was make it to Rangeley on Monday. But this meant I would also miss Mondays hiking with Audrey's group. Since I knew Elephant was on the list, I suggested they do that on Monday and so the rest of the week I would be in sync with them.

So I took the bus to Natick on Sunday and stayed the afternoon and night with my son and his family. I got to see my new grand daughter for another short period. At this point (5 weeks old) they grow like mad. I picked the car up Monday morning and got rolling by 8:00 AM. Now I had a different problem: I should arrive by about 1:00 PM when the rest of them would be sweating on Elephant and I didn't feel like just sitting idly by the lake. Actually I wouldn't mind doing that now, but I digress. So I looked at the map and decided I could fit in an "easy" peak on Monday afternoon and get a head start. This just might give me some extra time to fit in the two Fifty Finest peaks I also wanted to bag: Kibby and Caribou, both to be found off a logging road north of Stratton. The HH peak that was the easy one - with a trail and a fire tower on top - was Chain of Ponds Snow, also north of Stratton. So now I had a plan. When I got just past Farmington going up on Route 4, I would take the right on Route 27 and head for Stratton instead of Rangeley. Then I would follow Gene Daniel's published directions to the road leading to CofP Snow. As it happens, Snow is not only on the Hundred Highest list (# 70) but also on the Fifty Finest list (# 24). The Fifty Finest (FF) are those mountains with the most prominence.

I got to Stratton at 12:40 PM and after getting gas, headed north on Route 27, looking for the town line sign Gene mentions. Well, this sign is gone or I missed it so I went too far, but finally found the road after circling back. It is 13.3 miles north of Stratton off of Route 27, and there is a sign there "Penobscot Indian Territory".

The logging road is in excellent shape and there are no real complications. Simply drive 3.9 miles along the road, passing a few trailer homes and then take the right fork down a slight incline and go 1.1 miles further to a parking area. There is a sign there saying the Snow Mountain trail is marked and would ATVs and snowmobiles please stay on the trail. Since Gene Daniel's directions were a little complicated at this point, I was glad to see the reality was actually very straightforward. The trails shown on the topo map are pretty accurate except for the part just past the parking area which is at the spot marked "1820" on the map.

The weather had turned out to be pretty nice: mostly sunny but a bit humid and hazy. The lower part of the trail is over old logging roads and all turns are marked by black on yellow arrows that look like typical snowmobile signs. The roads show some signs of upkeep - the few blow downs were cleared and "wrong" turns were blocked so it was hard to get lost. But the surface was often rutted and/or flooded. But hikers can hardly complain about the quality of logging roads so I just moved along rather easily.

The roads ended when I reached Snow Mountain Pond - a lovely body of water. There looked like a bit of a camping area here and a sign "Fires by permit only". I did manage to miss the turn where the real trail begins - I followed the road along the side of the pond as it got muddier and muddier and finally came to a little cabin where the road dissapeared. But the terrain and directions of the road seemed wrong. After checking my compass I figured I had come too far so I turned back and in about 10 minutes, where the real muddy part had started I found the real trail heading up the mountain. I had lost about 20 minutes in this little error.

The real trail was rather nice. It was through lovely second growth and was steep at times. I would say the average ATV or snowmobile would not make it all the way up this trail. There was a patch of fir wave and a viewpoint near the top towards the south, and finally I reached the summit with it's imposing fire tower. I climbed about 10 or 12 feet to get above the trees and got some nice views, but the hazy skies did not afford spectacular views as Gene's descriptions tells. It took just 2 hours to the summit (including 20 minutes of being "lost"). After some food and rest, I took off and was back to the car in about 1 hour. True to form, the Maine weather gave me a little light rain the last 15 minutes of my hike. Allow 3:30 to 4 hours round trip for this peak and you'll be fine.

I drove back to Route 27, down to Stratton, over to Rangeley on Route 4, then across to Oquossoc, down Route 17 and finally found Audrey's cottage just in time for dinner. What great timing. So it was one down and counting.

White Cap and North Kennebago Divide

Tuesday was my first day of hiking with the group. The (ambitious) plan was to drive up the Cupsuptic Road off of Wiggle Brook Road as far as possible and then walk up the woods roads into Canada and do Boundary Peak. We would then do Cupsuptic Snow in the afternoon if we had the time and energy. Well, fate changed that plan, big time. When we got to the beginning of Wiggle Brook Road, just after the turn off from Canada Road, we saw the bridge over the Kennebago River was blocked by boulders and the bridge was sagging towards the right. We looked at the layout and yes, we might have been able to cross the span and drive around the boulders. Looking at the underside of the bridge shows the right hand I-beam has slipped off the wooden buttress (which looks all rotten) at the far end of the bridge, and the right side of the bridge is sagging with no I-beam supporting it.

We looked at the maps and Audrey suggested that since we were here, we could do White Cap and North Kennebago Divide via "Stan and Eric's route", and figure out how we would do Boundary and Cupsuptic Snow later. Since we were hoping to do a double today, this suggestion was quickly accepted. Stan and Eric's route is to approach the White Cap / NKD col from the southeast rather than from the Porter Brook (southwest) side which was the "normal" route. This name was given last year by the group Audrey was with when Stan drove his pick up truck with his son Eric up the Bear Brook Road and they did the peak that way. Today we would walk, although I was told that Stan would probably have driven over the bridge notwithstanding it's condition. :D This added about 6 miles to Stan' and Eric's route depending on how far they had managed to drive when they pioneered it. It turned out to be an outstanding route.

It was a sunny day - in fact a sunscreen day, given the long road walk, and the mosquitoes were a bit bothersome, but once we got moving we were cooled by a breeze and it was an extremely pleasant walk. The Bear Brook Road turns right off the Wiggle Brook Road right after the bridge and rises to a series of logging yards. If you get to drive this road, there are some deep ruts hardened into the road surface at this area. After about a mile, the signs of logging trucks disappeared and it became a pleasant grassy woods road. It must have been very well built since there was little or no erosional damage, even though it had clearly not been used recently. The road got narrower and there was actually one ditch, about 4 or 5 feet deep where a culvert had gotten blocked which even Stan could not have gotten through. But good old feet will go where no pickup truck can go and we continued up the valley and turned slightly eastward, keeping Bear Brook on our right as we went. Orange and white wild flowers and even a few unusual Bog Orchids lined the road.

The road got a bit hard to follow as it rose, but never actually disappeared and we went higher and higher. The topo map shows it rising to just over 3000' before disappearing, but we had no problem following it further up. At about 3200' we noticed another road angling off to the left towards NKD, and we noted that might be a good route to try when we did that peak later in the day. The main road kept rising until finally at about 3450' we reached the height of land (probably just north of the actual col) and lo and behold there was the herd path from Porter Brook going down to the left, and the herd path to White Cap rising towards the right (north). We had arrived at the col with absolutely no nasty areas whatsoever. It had taken us about 2 and a half hours (including a break) from the car to do the long but pleasant road walk. Stan and Eric's route was a true work of art. Not only was it easy, but it was lovely to experience.

We took the path to White Cap which starts out as a remnant of an old woods road. After about 15 minutes we turned left into the woods and followed various herd paths up along the ridge line to the peak. Cantdog was in the lead and she found the canister without difficulty. We were at the summit at 11:00 AM, about 30 minutes of bushwhacking from the col. We took a rest and ate some food, read the log and relaxed. For a bushwhack, everyone agreed this was an easy one. For me it was now two down and still counting. After about 20 minutes we followed our path back to the col and after a short discussion we decided to go back down the way we had come and try that woods road we had seen.

We made our way down and just before noon we started off towards North Kennebago Divide on the side path we had spotted on the way up. It was a considered decision to give up about 250' of elevation with the hope that it would be easier going. Audrey had warned us that it was a tough bushwhack to get from the col over onto the NKD ridge before eventually picking up herd paths. Cantdog was again in the lead and after traversing perhaps a tenth of a mile, the woods road disappeared and we found a herd path up to the right. Possibly we were finding remnants of the path shown on the topo but we would never know for sure. We worked our way up to the ridge line and then south along it towards the peak. Although we checked our compass bearing against the map, on the whole we were following the path of least resistance. We did encounter a few nasty areas and then we found ourselves on an even contour on the right of the ridge below the peak. We decided to back track and when we got back to the crest of the ridge we started working our way up generally on the left side where the going seemed easier. We made better progress and finally found the canister just after 1:00 PM. This bushwhack had taken about an hour. It was clearly the longer and tougher of the two.

There was a moose antler there and we had a good rest, eat a second lunch and relaxed. We got back moving at 1:23 with Marge in the lead this time. Marge did a great job pathfinding. I swear we never hit a nasty patch and she followed herd paths practically the whole way and hit the side road off of Bear Brook Road right on the dot. What had taken an hour going up took just under 45 minutes going down. I learned again that the compass never lies, but to be a slave to it is foolish. The trick is to follow the compass AND find the path(s) of least resistance. We had a couple of good samples of that today.

The walk back to the car was uneventful, and pleasant as it was, I must admit I was getting tired of it by the end. We had hiked over 12 miles today, most of it on the road. But it was now three down and we were all feeling rather pleased that we had knocked off these two via a rather nice alternate to the "standard" route.

Spaulding/Sugarloaf & Caribou Pond Rd condition

Thanks for the great company and wonderful hikes all week long. As a footnote to the week, on Friday Pat, Little Bear, and I set off to find that elusive path from Caribou Valley to the Spaulding lean-to. We were successful for about half of the way, but the path became more fragmented and various pieces of tape, gift wrap ribbons, and semi-cairns started appearing left, right, fore, and aft. We even built a couple of little cairns, adding, no doubt, to future confusion. We probably knew full well we'd not be retracing our steps even if we could. We popped out, soaking wet from the balsams, well above the lean-to. This, with gathering clouds, convinced us that this would be a Sugarloaf day and not an Abraham day. The rain started in earnest on the other side of Spaulding. Little Bear hurried along, bagged Sugarloaf, and caught up with us on the edge of the ravine. The rain stopped long enough for us to return to the car along the road, from the AT crossing to the washed out parking area. By the way, the Caribou Pond Road has deteriorated quite a bit during the 2 weeks we were there. However, I'm not as brave with my wheels as some! And I'm not disappointed that the path to the lean-to remains a mystery to be solved another time.

I don't know if this is posted elsewhere, but I'll take this turn to say CONGRATULATIONS MARGE!! A great feat.

Sounds like a great week with plenty of peaks - pretty area. Nice pictures PB. When Little Bear returns she has a task at hand for me!!! Kris....
 
Boundary Peak

We had a several sets of directions for getting to the start of routes to Boundary Peak from the Canadian side, including some from Arm and some from Meo (which were based on Ridgerunner's directions). Gene Daniels' write-up also quotes Ridgerunner's direction. But they all referred to Route 212, which we couldn't find in DeLorme. We assumed it was a Canadian highway. On the way back from our Tuesday hike we stopped in the general store in Oquossuc to see if they had a map of Canada adjacent to this part of Maine. They had one and Audrey looked at it and discovered Route 212 was just the road that connected to Route 27 at the border. Simple, no need to buy a map. (Actually there was another road, Route 161 for a few miles first).

So we got a real early start, getting up at 5:00 AM and getting out the door at 6:11 (target was 6:00 AM, not bad). So it was up 17 to Oquossuc, over to Rangeley, then to Stratton and then north on Route 27. Pat filled up with gas in Eustace. I was driving my own car because of plans we had for the afternoon and I dropped it off at the start of the logging road to Chain of Ponds Snow. Then I grabbed my stuff and hopped into Audrey and Pat's Subaru and we were off again, doing fine until we hit road construction on Route 27. This road was undergoing very extensive resurfacing and in some cases rerouting up in this neck of the woods.

At 7:53 we got to the border and the nice man asked more questions than usual and checked all our IDs. We said we were hikers, and I guess we looked honest. The only strange thing was he kept asking Audrey if she had been here before - I guess she has a familiar looking face. We got through after a few minutes and proceeded straight on what was now Route 161 to Woburn. Audrey reminded Pat several time that the speed limits posted were in Kilometers per hour, so slow down. We didn't particularly want to get stopped for speeding where we couldn't speak the local language. After about 3 miles we reached the small town of Woburn and took a left on Route 212. Then about 2 miles later we saw the sign for Mount Gosford on a dirt road on the left: "ZEC Louise Gosford". Much relieved, we could now follow Ridgeruner's excellent directions which I had a copy of (via Meo via Arm via SherpaK). 3.8 miles down the road, sure enough there was a gate hose on the left. Pat went in and did the talking. We stayed in the car and argued whether the sign (in French) meant $5 per vehicles or $5 per person (it was per vehicle). To pass the time, several of us used the out house conveniently placed there. I'm told it was pretty smelly inside. You might want to bring one of those paper toilet seat covers if you are sensitive to these things. But then again you wouldn't be a hiker if you were that sensitive.:D

Moving right along, we went down the road and checked off Ridgeruner's milestones one by one. The stop sign, the Gosford trailhead, the bridge, the second bridge, the fork, the right turn and there we were at the gravel pit where we parked. It was 8:45, a little more than 2 and a half hours from Oquossuc. And to top it off there was another (smelly) outhouse here. It seems this whole area is some kind of reserve for hikers and hunters and there were a number of indications that it was well used in hunting season.

The route started in the forward corner of the parking area, where there was a tumbled down cairn (which Cantdog rebuilt a bit after returning). The weather was foggy and chilly. No sunscreen today! We crossed a stream, passed across an meadow and immediately started up a steep well worn trail. It looked exactly like an ATV trail in spite of the "NO ATV" signs (an icon of a 4 wheeler with a red slash across it) both here and at the top. There was also a sign "Chasseur à L`affût" at the bottom (and top) of this trail with a silhouette of a hunter and a gun on either side of the words. The trail climbed the ridge line coming west off the boundary from monument 447. See the topo map. The red cross on the topo is the approximate location of the gravel pit. The ATV trail follows the path shown on the map going southeast up to the ridge and then follows the ridge crest to the boundary, hitting the swath just south of the hill. It was quite steep and rocky in the lower section but once on the ridge it was a rather pleasant woods road. It was clearly well maintained. It was much more prominent than any side trails and it would be impossible to lose it. I assume the hunters or snowmobilers maintain it (ATVers never maintain nuthin'). When we hit the boundary, the map indicated we were just north of monument 447 but in the fog we didn't see it. It took us 32 minutes from the car to the boundary, all of it on this well maintained path.

We then turned left on the boundary and we climbed one intermediate peak (about 3690') after about half a mile. We came down off this and in the col we found boundary monument 446. This was an interesting construction. Originally put in place in 1842 by the joint surveying parties from the US and Canada. It was a metal monument about 3 feet high in a concrete base. We moved along up the slope. Our peak was the top of this next rise from Monument 446. We shortly gained the peak and our goal for the morning. The canister was off on the US side (with the outdated elevation of 3810'). We did the usual things:took pictures, signed the log, read the log, ate our food, etc. It was 10:10. It had taken us just 1:10 to do the climb. A very easy peak to bag from this side - except for the long drive. For me that was four down for the week. And it was till before lunch!

After about 15 minutes at the summit (there were no views - just clouds blowing through) we started back. Audrey showed us where she and Pat had to bushwhack from Monument 446 back to their car when the did this peak years before and they were running out of time and dark was approaching. Cantdog said "you had to bushwhack down through that stuff?". It looked pretty thick. Audrey said that yeah, it was pretty thick. Along this section of the swath, on the Canadian side were a number of hunting blinds. It's apparently a shooting gallery here for Moose here during hunting season. They put out salt licks and drinking troughs and when the Moose come by it's bang bang, bye bye. Sporting.

We found our ATV trail and moved on down. The steep eroded part took a fair amount of care to avoid falling on the downward trip. We reached the car at 11:15. It took about 2:15 including rests. Not bad.

The trip back in the car was similar to the journey up, but now it was the US border guard who asked us polite questions. It went well until he asked if we had bought anything we were bringing back. Pat hesitated and said "no, nothing". Then I thought I heard a voice from the back seat "except some blisters". I don't think the nice man understood sarcasm and although I think he missed the comment, he did go back and inspect the contents of Audrey's pack. But the stuff inside a hikers pack is not the stuff of intrigue and he let us go. This time.

When we passed the road construction on Route 27 we saw a logging truck with a full load which had tipped over onto it's side. It was a rather frightening scene. I hope no one was hurt. It looked like the truck was not moving fast since there was no forward spill from his load and the cab was relatively undamaged. I would think the driver would have been unhurt if he was wearing his seat belt. Let's hope so. We finally reached the Chain of Ponds Snow logging road at 1:05 PM. I got into my car to drive up to Kibby Mountain and the rest started in to do Snow Mountain. Today would be another double.

We stayed in the car and argued whether the sign (in French) meant $5 per vehicles or $5 per person (it was per vehicle).
When I was there, the guy only spoke French and fees had to be paid in Canadian money - no US$ even at par, this is government bureaucracy. We had to drive back to the nearest town and go to 3 businesses before we found one that would change $10. (At that time, maps were $2 and camping $3 per group.)

Right you are. It is west and then as you go down southwest. I wasn't careful and was just thinking of it as opposite the way we came. It would have been better to say "the other side".

We did much better. he spoke English well enough for Pat and we even got $1 change (Canadian) back from the $5 US to make up for the exchange rate. And we got a nice map for free.

We knew about Mont Gosford from other reports. In fact it's in the name of the reserve area we paid to enter. But 1) It was cloudy so no views and 2) folks wanted to get back to do Chain of Ponds Snow (and Kibby for myself) that afternoon. Did I miss a 2k prominence? There's always a next time.

Wednesday July 14: Kibby Mountain

Kibby Mountain is one of the New England Fifty Finest, or the fifty most prominent peaks in New England. Or actually it might be one of the Fifty Finest. Because of uncertainties in the available topographic data, it is unclear whether Kibby or the nearby Caribou Mountain has that honor. Kibby has a spot elevation of 3654', whereas Caribou has no spot elevation, but the highest contour below it's peak is 3640'. So Caribou is somewhat between 3640' and 3660'. The higher of the two peaks gets the prominence, so what to do? Climb them both of course.

Since it lies off of the Gold Brook Road, which turns off Route 27 about 16 miles north of Stratton, I decided to climb it on the way back from Boundary Peak. The others in the group would be climbing Chain of Ponds Snow while I climbed Kibby.

The trail description is given in the new MMG (page 202) so I'll be brief in this report. The main surprise was when I got to where the trailhead should be, about 9 miles up the Gold Brook Road, there was instead of a trailhead, a 4 lane superhighway of a logging road, newly built. Oops, I thought my mileage was off so I searched further along the road, to no avail. Finally I went back to this new logging road, parked and walked up about 10 minutes (to about 2550') where the original trail was shown on the topo as turning sharply left. Lo and behold, there was the trailhead on the left side at a wide area where the road leveled off. There were signs of extensive logging all along Gold Brook Road and this new road was just one example. Luckily the trail was still intact from this point up, and a lovely trail it was. I left my car down at the turnoff of this new logging road from Gold Brook Road but all but the faint of heart could drive up to the trailhead.

I climbed the easy woods road in about an hour from the logging road, climbed the observation tower there and got great views of clouds swirling around me. I looked over towards Snow Mountain where my friends also had a fire tower, but today was not the day to wave at each other.

I was down in less than an hour and back to the cottage where I was able to get my shower in before the others returned. Life was good.

Thursday July 15: Cupsuptic Snow

Today was the big day. Yesterday, when Marge summited Chain of Ponds Snow it was # 99 for her. Today would be her # 100. We allowed ourselves to sleep a little later than usual and we made sure we had the fixings for a summit party. Unfortunately the weather was not cooperating: cloudy with a good chance of rain. Well, we're hikers - a little rain won't bother us. I volunteered to carry the Champagn - ugh the bottle weighed more than the drink! But it was a nice bottle of Moet and Chandon - a Christmas present Audrey and Pat received last Christmas and had saved for just such an occasion as this.

We got out the door and followed the same driving route as we had on Tuesday, and parked as before just before the sagging bridge at the start of Wiggle Brook Road. Marge had decided she would do the long road walk in her sneakers and save her boots for the climb. The rest of us just went ahead with our boots on. Today we were joined by Little Bear (Kris) who had arrived at the cottage last night and was thrilled to be doing this celebratory climb, although she had already bagged this peak on her own HH list.

[From my earlier report on White Cap / North Kennebago Divide] The bridge over the Kennebago River was blocked by boulders and the bridge was sagging towards the right. We looked at the layout and yes, we might have been able to cross the span and drive around the boulders. Looking at the underside of the bridge shows the right hand I-beam has slipped off the wooden buttress (which looks all rotten) at the far end of the bridge, and the right side of the bridge is sagging with no I-beam supporting it.

We got walking at 10:20 with mosquitoes and light rain in the air. The rain was not quite heavy enough for me to put on rain gear, and actually as long as I kept moving it was a little bit refreshing in what would otherwise have been a very muggy morning. The road walk had been measured before as 4.3 miles which agrees with my tracing from the map. The woods road starts up towards Snow from Wiggle Brook Road towards the southeast just before (.2 miles) Cupsuptic Road turns off Wiggle Brook Road. We got there about 11:50 and Audrey said it didn't look quite right. It was just at the height of land (about 2500') and is shown on the topo map. Just to be sure, we scouted down to where Cupsuptic road turns off and since it was the only woods road turning in that direction, and since it agreed with the map, Audrey acquiesced. Last time she was here she was riding in the bumpy back of Stan's pickup truck and Stan had actually driven up the woods road probably 3/4 of a mile, so her memory was perhaps jarred.

From what I could see, the woods road followed the path marked on the topo map up to where it turns to the right around 2900' - 3000', so we took our compass bearing from that point on the map. The woods road was generally easy going and we took the straight course, or slightly left, whenever there were possible side roads. We seemed to head towards the knob (3221') shown on the map to the west of Snow somewhat more than the map would indicate, but that was perhaps just due to turns in the road. When we got to about 2950' there was a grassy path crossing our path at right angles and a cairn straight across the intersection. We took this as out bushwhack starting point and set our compasses from the map (approximately ESE) towards the summit.

Cantdog led again and did a marvelous job. I was a little apprehensive that her excursions around nasty areas and her endeavors to find herd paths were taking us too far to the right of our bearing, but I was wrong. As Audrey attested from he previous trip here, following the compass too closely can lead to very slow tedious going. There was a smattering of open grassy areas, recently clear cut areas, and areas of thick young Spruce. We followed Cantdog's path of least resistance and made the ridge line somewhat to the right (SW) of the peak but it was very easy going from there up towards the peak. As we got closer the herd paths got more prominent and when we got near the summit, Marge took over the lead, so she would have the honor of finding the canister. Suddenly she said nonchalantly "There's the canister" and it was done. The time was 1:45 - one hour from the start of the bushwhack. Once again excellent pathfinding had gotten us to our goal with a minimum of "nasty" stuff. To further enhance the situation, the rain had stopped somewhere along the way and the sky was actually getting bright. It was party time!

Marge's first words when she got to the canister (the kind you unscrew from the bottom) were "Why do they have to screw these things so f*cking tight?" Way to go Marge, one small step for a woman, one giant leap for womankind indeed.

I got out the Champagn and Marge had the cups and we found a thigh bone from a Moose (or was it from a bear) and she tried to knock the cork out with it (click for photo). But gentle pushing worked better (sounds like bushwhacking, no?) and we soon toasted Marge's 100th.

Congratulations Marge, 31 years after climbing that first 4000 footer in 1973, the New England Hundred Highest were yours. We took numerous pictures and enjoyed the food and drink, but all good things must come to an end and it was time to start down.

Audrey told Cantdog "Lead the way down exactly the same way as we came up". And sure enough, avoiding all nasties we arrived at the cairn at the top of the woods road on the dot 50 minutes later. Once again an excellent pathfinding job.

The rest was a boring walk back to the car, but we were at least afforded a clear view of our peak for the first time (click for photo). And would you believe, 15 minutes before hitting the car, the rain and mosquitoes were back. That's Maine!

Friday: East Kennebago

On Friday the group split up. Cantdog and I were going after East Kennebago while Audrey, Pat and Little Bear were going to try for Spaulding and Abraham from Caribou Valley Road (they actually did Sugarloaf rather than Abraham due to conditions). Marge was taking the day off. Audrey and Pat had done East Kennebago on Sunday and Cantdog was with them, but got separated from them and missed the summit, so today was her East Kennebago revenge. Audrey had seen an entry in the EK log of someone who had bushwhacked along the township boundary line which crosses the woods road at about 2950' and thence to the peak. Since anything that differs from the "normal" route intrigues me, and since Cantdog was game and would be doing the peak from another route we decided on this plan. I had climbed the NE peak of Elephant last year from the AT starting along the county boundary line which crosses east of that peak and I liked it and it was not too hard. Boundary lines tend to be well marked, but since they take no cognizance whatsoever of steepness or anything else for that matter, they can be "interesting". The map showed this particular boundary rising from the woods road just south of west for about 300' and then leveling off. At the point where it reaches the height of land (about 3280') there seemed to be a broad ridge climbing steeply at first and then more gently towards the peak in a northwesterly direction. This was our target route.

We followed the driving directions on the logging roads in from Route 16 and Cantdog was able to get onto the final woods road up to about 2350' where she parked just after an open area where another road went up to the left. The last mile or so was rocky and slow going.

The hike up the woods road was easy going. It was grassy up above where vehicles were able to drive. There seemed to be a lot of logging activity to the right (downhill side) of the road with alternating areas of clear cut and uncut areas and skid roads running down the slope. This continued up to about 2600' after which we had uncut forests on both sides of the road. After hiking about 1.4 miles we reached the boundary line. It was marked with a small cairn on the left (uphill side) and yellow paint blazes (splotches, really) on trees along the line. It ran in a B-line diagonally up to the left. The forest was fairly open here and the boundary line was not cleared, but was easy to follow due to it's straight line nature and the occasional yellow blaze. It was relatively easy going.

After about .4 miles and 23 minutes, we reached the height of land and the boundary flattened out. This was about 3300'. We set our compass bearing from the map and headed into the woods. The forest was mid aged with a number of older trees and an extraordinary amount of biomass underfoot.The mulch in places was 2 feet deep. The route was fairly steep at first and there were a few thickets of younger Spruce but it was not tough going. There were no herd paths to speak of. This route really did seem pristine and untrodden. We soon reached the broad ridge top and Cantdog hit the canister right on the dot. We were just 35 minutes from the boundary line and just under an hour from the woods road. Once again we had found an excellent route which I would recommend.

Cantdog had a very big smile when she reached the canister. Her revenge was sweet after missing this peak a few days earlier. We saw the note in the log that Audrey had left on the previous Sunday: "We lost Julie!". Cantdog (Julie) wrote a cute reply "Yeah, I'm late for dinner here". The important thing is we made it and we felt great. Another entry just above Audrey's said "6-21-04 Found It!! Second attempt and almost gave up today. #99 and one more to go. Now I hope I can find my car". Yes we hope he did find his car. We had a bite to eat and then returned the way we had come.

On the way down we strayed slightly to the right (west) and found ourselves with a few "cliffy" areas. If you try this route, err to the left on the way down, and on the way up start up from the boundary line as soon as you reach the height of land. Don't go too far along or you'll hit a fairly steep slope. Look at the topo map and you'll see what I mean. We were back to the woods road in about 55 minutes and back at the car about a half hour later. The sun was making occasional appearances, we were done and it was just 12:20.

That afternoon we hiked Bald Mountain, near Audrey's cottage. A nice "dessert" hike as Cantdog called it. There were beautiful views from a lookout tower of Rangeley Lake and Lake Mooslookmeguntic. When we got back to the cottage, Marge swears she saw us on the tower through her binoculars from the lake shore at the cottage. Who knows, could have been. Oh, and we saw a moose on the drive back. It was a nice end to a great week of peak bagging.

Boundary Map - Canadian side

I just found a copy of the map we got from the gatehouskeeper when we approached Boundary Peak from the canadian side.

It's a small image but you can make out Route 161, Route 212, and the route down into the area. The place we parked is right near the bottom edge of the "peninsula" that goes into Maine on the right side of the map, between the 276000 and 276500 UTM grid labels where a small river valley goes east off of a larger river valley (that was the last right hand turn).

Sorry it's so small. I have the real life version in front of me. If I get a chance I'll scan it in.

On line map

The ridge the ATV trail went up is off the bottom (my map has it) and Monument Peak is opposite the letter "E" in "MAINE" just off the boundary line in this area. It's published by Sentiers frontaliers, Inc. which adminiisters the area. Seems to be a membership club promoting multi-use of the area. See the main page at Web site

Any French speakers (readers): if you could read a bit from the site and give us the gist of what they are about it would be appreciated.

Two matters that need clarification:

The route via Bear Brook is properly called "Audrey's Route", she discovered it from some vantage point on the West Kennebago Divide. Aside from the fact that Erik and I hiked that route at Gathering 7.0, we have no claim to it. Even being Mayor and Dog Warden respectively of Stetsontown does not give us that bureaucratic right ...

Second, I am now more selective about crossing wiped out logging road bridges, not through any greater maturity but becomes I now bring my own vehicle rather than rent them. "We'll jump off that bridge when we get to it."

I am surprised that Marge started hiking when she was only 8.

The HP of the range between Cupsuptic & Kennebago Rivers (Greater Kennebago divide?) is not Gosford either, but a nondescript 3900-footer near Monument 443. It has just under 1800' prominence (key col toward Snow 3960).

When we were there, the map we got was just of the ZEC (Zone Exploitatione Controlle??) which seems to now be called Forest Habitate or somesuch on your map. There weren't any hiking trails, recreational use seemed to be moose hunting and salmon fishing (which cost something like C$30/person/day so we didn't try).

I see that peak. The Map I got from the gate keeper has a spot elevation (in red) on it of 1187m = 3894'. It's a red blur on the on-line version, sorry. They have Gosford as 1193m = 3914'. There is a note in French on my map: "Projection : NTM Zone 7 nad 83; Cartographie : Francois Villemaire, FHMG - 03". Don't know if that's any kind of "official" data. The On-line "Atlas of Canada" Atlas link also has Gosford as 1193m.

Topozone also has them (using Norethwest Pond 1:24000 1990 quad) but they have done something funny with the Canadian elevation data. From what I can see they have Monument 443 at 3800'+ or 3820'+ (hard to tell if there's another line above 3800 in there). I would think the boundary would have gone over your peak unless there is a slight col west of Monument 443 that drains west. Have you been there? Which way does your peak drain? Did the 1843 survey get it wrong?

Anyway, if you figure the contours on the Canadian side, topozone has major lines at 125' intervals and minor lines at 25' intervals. See Mon 443 map which puts your peak at 3900'+. Gosford OTOH is shown on topozone Gosford map as 3875'+.

So the Canadian Map has Gosford higher, Topozone has your peak higher.

Any idea as to which might be more trustworthy? My only experience with Canadian maps are the 1:50000 NTS series which are available on-line, but the on-line versions suck big time. Here's the one for that area: Toporama NTS Map. You could get a magnifying glass and try counting contour lines up and down. Blech!

Roy: I just looked carefully at the map Arm sent me when I was gathering information about this trip. It seems to be a xerox of an NTS map (paper version, much nicer than on-line version). It has spot elevations of 1187 (=3894') on the Mon 443 peak, and 1189 (=3900') on Gosford.
Arm: What was the source of that map you sent me? The one on the Word document with the photos?

Note that what Topozone shows is from the CNTS equivalent of USGS maps, which I have in the original (Canadian) paper form. The USGS map politely uses Canadian data on the Canadian side of the border instead of using their own aerial photos and plotting them, so the Canadian data appears on the USGS map as well and was scanned by Topozone. I'm sure that the CNTS like the USGS does make mistakes but for now I will assume that the official government topo map is more accurate than a park map that just gives spot elevations. Don't ask me why the map has 25' contours instead of 7.5 m.

As for the summit not being on the boundary, that is true of many of the peaks along the border/watershed if you take a close look. The same is true in Colorado where only 2 of 50-some 14,000 footers are on the Continental Divide.
 
Great trip reports. A few thoughts on the ZEC Louise-Gosford vs. Forêt habitée du mont Gosford and the Sentiers frontaliers:

3 organizations manage the Mont Gosford area:

1) La Forêt habitée du mont Gosford: a project managed by the municipality of Woburn; primary focus is forestry management (C$450,000 annual revenue from forest products on the Gosford forêt) and development of light recreational use; under this management scheme since 1996; see generally http://www.nrcan.gc.ca/cfs-scf/national/what-quoi/sof/sof01/testing_f.html

2) La ZEC Louise-Gosford: an association of hunters and fishermen who manage the wildlife resources of the Gosford and Louise sectors, plus the development of recreational use (ZECs are an interesting form of management where the sovereign spins off management responsibility to specially-incorporated nonprofits run by hunters and fishermen -- sort of like if Maine had Trout Unlimited and the Sportsmen's Alliance of Maine run a parcel of land);

3) Les Sentiers frontaliers inc.: a hiking club which manages the 100+ km footpath from Mont-Mégantic through the woods and mountains to Mont Gosford.
