I'd love to know the logistics/schedule for this hike . . . I can't figure out what they did when. First day, Old Speck and ?. Second day six peaks? Which?

And day 4, Katahdin and Hamlin make sense, but they would have had to do North Brother the same day, right?

Does anyone know any more details?

We saw this on the news a week ago...and wondered the schedule ourselves. Too bad when the list of peaks was given (in the article) it didn't give them in order...or with some sort of breakdown per day...if you didn't know any better, you'd probably think that the list was IN order...NOT!

Oh well...I think it's quite a cool goal. Glad it wasn't me doing it...my old, ancient knees couldn't handle that.

Some of us did a modified version of this back in (gulp) 1993, on the "Hike from Heck" -- not to be confused with the Hike from Hell... modified in that we started with the Vermont 4s on Day #1, and Spaulding and Redington weren't yet on the Maine 4 list, but aren't too difficult to tag on to Sugarloaf and the Crockers.

See Mohamed's site:

PS: Brownville (think that was the town), Maine, policemen are mean.

Puzzled Too!!!

I am going to Maine with a buddy in July to do all of the 4k peaks. I am working out the itinerary now.

I can't figure out how they did them all in 4 days.

Perhaps (tongue-in-cheek) with performance enhancers....tons of Caffiene, Police Escorts...or a chartered Helicopter...

Perhaps it is possible for some uber-hiker-types but I did not get the impression they were of that ilk.

I have not done the ME 14 in 48 hours, I just know that it is doable under the right conditions (I have a detailed itinerary set up, but I am not going to post it here). I did attempt it 5 years ago with Stinkyfeet and Mr. X (as our driver), but we quit after doing about one half of it due to a few issues.

That was one fun weekend though!

Cool.
May I ask most respectfully, how do you cover the driving (legally/safely) in your 48 hours? (you don't have to answer).

I am somewhat skeptical and very willing to be proven wrong...:D

Is the Driver "Mr. X" anonymous due to warrants out for his arrest for speeding ? ;)

I can see the hikes being done in 4 days...perhaps for me 5 days....but I can't seem to fit the driving into a 4 day schedule no less 48 hours.

I am busting with curiosity as I am setting up an itinerary for all the peaks in July. As I mentioned above.

Respectfully, Zer0-G

In a nutshell, to do all 14 in 48 hours there would be:

62 miles of hiking
24K of elevation gain
296 miles of driving

Breaking that into times:

33 hours hiking
7 hours driving
8 hours sleep/rest

Having a driver that doesn’t join in on the hikes makes this a quite safe and legal adventure :). As you can see by the numbers, there is much more hiking than driving…

BTW, Mr. X is a good friend of mine (that is his screen name on VFTT), and he is definitely not anonymous. PM him if your ever looking to go see Scissor Fight :D

Well, Since you put it that way .... :D

Frodo, when I saw the part in the news article about the blisters, etc., I figured the 2 hikers were no Stinkyfeet/Frodo team! If the article had been about you two, I probably would have said something about a laid back weekend. :D

Here's my best guess:

Day 1
Old Speck

Day 2
Saddleback
The Horn
Abraham
Sugarloaf
Spaulding
Redington

Day 3
Crocker
South Crocker
Avery
West Peak

Day 4
Baxter
Hamlin
North Brother

Looks like a good guess...;) That's what I would do if I had a tight schedule.

Personally, even though it is certainly do-able, unless I was motivated above and beyond, I would prefer a more moderate relaxed approach over 5 to 6 days. Especially if I had the time.

I can see 48 hours to "push the limits". I can see where there is satisfaction in that. Even in 4 days, some of that applies. But, if you only had 4 days vacation left and wanted to finish something, that might be motivation too.

I guess, on the other hand, perhaps I'm just getting old and farty....:D
