Hi,

I'm am looking to purchase some GPS software for a Garmin Etrex Vista. What's the best gps software that covers the Adirondack Park? Any suggestions? I did a search, but the threads were over 2 years old.

Thanks!

Laurie

You may be SOL with an older unit. I would recommend getting Guide to a Adirondack Trails (T. Goodwin editor) with its trail map. Then try Wikiloc and see if anything interests you and then see if you can download the GPS tracks onto your unit. For instance: Wikiloc. for Algonquin.

GPS Software for Adirondacks

Thanks for the info.

Note: The Garmin is a brand new unit if that's any help.

I believe Topo 2008 is the current software with which you can interchange data between your Vista and PC. The base maps provided by Topo 2008 can overlay the ones which come with your GPS - generally speaking, they provide better detail.

As a map software, Topo 2008 isn't the best. However, all things considered, most buy it first, and add additional software later.

Amazon usually has the best prices.

Edit - Topo 2008 might now be called Topo US 100K - here's a link: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=28229

Kevin's post links to 100K scale topos for the entire US. They are often adequate for hiking.

Garmin also sells US TOPO 24K National Parks, East which includes the DAKs (and the Whites) at a 24K scale. https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=999

The Garmin website includes viewers so you can preview the above map products.

List of Garmin map products: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=145&pID=310 (click on the map tab and "view additional maps for this product")

I am new to GPS ownership.

This thread on FREE GPS maps compatible with Garmin devices is extremely valuable. It saved me $$$ rather than purchasing maps from Garmin. I am sure there is some benefit to purchasing the Garmin maps but for now the GPSFILEDEPOT and the NG ADK software works for my needs. Thanks
