DNS cache poisoning attacks are sometimes used to misdirect people to a fake site. For instance, it might be used to fool people into attempting to log into a fake bank (or financial) site to steal their login names and passwords. In this case, it might have been phony "advertising" to drum up business for the gift shop (and it might have redirected other websites in addition to VFTT). Or it could have simply been a malfunction.

The integrity of DNS is one of the security weak points of the Internet...

Clicking on the http://208.87.227.68 link only took me to the face page or home page. I was able to get that far by googling some old threads and clicking on them. However, when I clicked on "click here to enter" it went to the Italian site.

According to my figuring, it shouldn't have:
Starting with http://208.87.227.68 and clicking on "click here to enter" takes me to http://208.87.227.68/forums/.

Depending on how the opening page is written, it could take you to http://208.87.227.68/forums/ or http://www.vftt.org/forums/. If it took you the the second form, the DNS error would occur and you should have been sent to the Italian site. (But it takes me to the first form.)

Using the numerical IP address should completely bypass the DNS.

I was able to log in, and view new posts, all with the IP address in the address bar.

Does anyone have the URL for that Italian site? That looked like a cool one.
