Trail Conditions: Light snow in the woods just as we got to around the split of Liberty Springs and Flume Slide. Flume Slide was passable, but a lot of work to avoid ice or avoid rock depending on the footgear selection. Osseo Trail had a thin coat of snow but just enought o make it slippery. Liberty Tentsite had about 1-2" of snow on the ground that melted to about half that overnight. Franconia Ridge Trail was mostly snow until Little Haystack (where it goes above treeline). The rest of the ridge was a mixture of snow and water but little ice. The wind was rather high on the exposed sections. Down to the Greenleaf hut was also mostly snow and bare rock with some pockets of ice until treeline. The dip below treeline before Greenleaf was an ice skating rink. This continued until about 100' below the hut down Old Bridal Path. Old Bridal Path quickly dried out as we descended and by about 3000' was totally dry. Looking back at Flume and Liberty on the way out it was clear they had significantly less snow than the day we went up.

Special Equipment: We used microspikes a fair bit. The mix of ground cover was rather tricky and required frequent changes. I was very glad to have them on Flume Slide and again right around Greenleaf. Everywhere else was passable without though they were handy in some places. That said we did bump into some people in sneakers that made it up Old Bridal and down Falling Waters!

Comments: Wow! Great days for hiking. Fantastic trip. http://www.flickr.com/photos/specialks/sets/72157622772541160/
