Abol Bridge from Baxter Road

We plan to leave a car at the parking area by the store at Abol Bridge (where the Golden Road crosses the Penobscot) while we do our 100 Mile Wilderness hike in September. Keith Shaw suggested this spot. When we finish summiting Katahdin, we are led to believe there will be a number of potential rides south out of the park from Thru-hiker friends and family. We will hit the big K at probably the peak of Thru-hiker season.

The question is: can we walk fairly easily from the Abol Beach Picnic area on the pond, just off the road, down on the old road to Abol Bridge? It's here. It looks like about a mile of easy terrain. This seems a lot easier than getting someone to drive up the Golden Road from outside the Park (and a helluva lot easier than hiking all the way back from Katahdin Stream CG/Birches). Any other suggestions?

Hey, anyone want to meet us (probably September 8th) and summit K with us?

PB, this is a common winter route. It's about 1.4 miles of easy terrain from Abol Bridge to Abol Pond. Never followed the route in summer, but in winter it's wide open kick-and-glide.

PB, it's an easy and pretty walk down along the stream. Can't remember the exact distance, but it's no more than a couple miles of easy walking. The trails are pretty wide, and you won't find the roots that "enhance" the walk down the AT from K. Stream.

We've given several through hikers rides from K. Stream out of the park, and often to Millinocket--I don't think you'll have any trouble at all.

BTW, Abol Bridge is the perfect place to leave your vehicle. Enjoy the Hundred!!!

Thanks, but if anything, we might err the other way. The 9th is our "backup" date if we are delayed or there is bad weather for summiting on the 8th.

Ditto to all the above. I've given lots of folks rides out. There are a few different routes one could take. The main one is only a bit more than 1 mile. You'll see blue x-c skiing "blazes" along the trail. There are a few other old trails and whatnot left over from the '77 fire, but you shouldn't have any problems following the main route.
