I was surprised to see three cars in the parking lot on this cold morning with about an inch of new snow. They must have been camping since I saw no one all day, and only saw faint tracks throughout the range, maybe from the previous day. Snow amounts increased to about 3-4" at the higher elevations, with less on Couchie. The terrain is mostly frozen high on the Santanoni ridge. But all the paths still have undependable footing, mostly icy, wet and muddy underneath. The Bradley Pond trail is in its usual wet condition with mostly a thin layer of ice concealing the mud. Without Microspikes, this hike would have taken forever (or I would not have come back alive) :).
