Trail Conditions: Beautifully stamped out trail from parking lot all the way up the Ammo to the Hut. Snow provided just enough cushioning to make the climb seem like a breeze. Trail leading from the Hut up to Monroe was also well stamped out, but icy patches near the summit required great caution. Also some icy patches on Crawford Trail heading to Washington, but they were easily spotted and avoided. The descent along the Cog Railway route was fast and wonderful.

Special Equipment Required: Traction gear of some sort was needed. We did the entire day in snowshoes and had no difficulties. We saw a few people using microspikes and they reported no problems. Full winter gear/wind protection was crucial. We talked to some hikers back in the lot who were turned back after reaching the Lakes for lack of proper equipment.

Comments: Very mild conditions down below…..but winter was raging up top! Wind speeds atop Monroe were in the 45 mph range. Winds on the upper approaches to Washington via Crawford Trail were incredible…..in the 70 mph range! Long views in all directions all day.

Enjoyed a pleasant reunion with RickB on the summit of Washington….had a great time conversing with Rick and other members of his group on the descent via the Cog Railway route.

The perfect winter day to tag Washington…a real gift. Hiked through some exciting conditions and met up with some great people along the way. Hey Schorman Sr…you were in our thoughts throughout the trip.
