down low was packed, soft snow - sporadic bare spots, tough to decide between barebooting with mild postholing, using snowshoes over the bare spots or constant on and off - I did a little of each between the out and back trips, prior tracks indicated the same from predecessors. Higher elevations/second half of the trail had powder, where snowshoes were essential.

Trails were tough to follow on the second half. There were no tracks over 3000 (prior to mine), and the snow is still high enough that normally overhead branches are not overhead and markers are below eye level. If my tracks are visible, you'll probably see some roundabout routes (between losing the trail, and good old looking around). I planned to make it a loop, but lost the Hunter Mountain trail, and went back the way I came.

All in all, its a beautiful trail, and I really enjoyed my first time in the Catskills.
