    The article ends with:
    “To summit is optional,” he said, paraphrasing the mountaineer Ed Viesturs, “to get back down is mandatory.” And, again, I chose to believe him.
    It is an expression I heard long ago and have been using often, in a modified form: "Reaching the summit is optional; returning to your car is not". Now I know where it came from.
