Hiked Mt Cardigan on Sat 5/1/10.
Ascent via West Ridge Trail (red blazes) from Cardigan State Park parking area (accessible via NH 118 and Cardigan Mtn Road). Trail is muddy in spots, particularly first 0.2 miles, and the short boardwalk at 0.7 miles. Keep an eye out of blazes on downed trees. Above the treeline, there is still runoff on some of the rock faces which makes them slick.
Descent via Clark Trail (white blaze) to Forest Service cabin is quite steep, then South Ridge Trail (white blaze) to South Peak. After Skyland Trail intersection, South Ridge Trail switches to red blazes. The next mile or so is in bad condition. Lots of short steep descents on slippery rock faces, and exposed roots are also very slippery.
A new pit toilet with enclosed hut is being built at the NW end of the parking area, but is not yet complete. It's suitable as a changing room, however.
