Presently working on the 770(777) list and while doing so decided to also do the following sub lists:
1. New England 50 finest which I completed on Smarts(NH) in 2006 on 11th Nov.
2. Northeast USA 50 finest which I completed on Black (NY) in 2009 on 18th May

Would now like to pursue those lists up to the 100 most prominent peaks (lists here posted). BTW has anyone completed those lists besides Roy Schweiker for the NE 100 finest (actually he completed the top 150) and Roy, John Thompson, Bob Packard & myself for the Northeast 50 finest? No one has done to my knowledge the Northeast 100 yet, so the race is on!

Northeast USA 100 most prominent (N.E. + NY – some also add PA & NJ but this changes nothing to the list since the most prominent peak for those states has a prominence of only 1440 ft, thus not even making the northeast 130 list)

Values for prominences & elevations are interpolated

Data was obtained by consulting the Top 100 Prominence lists for the states of ME, NH, VT & NY
Ref. Lists of John (maintained by John Kirk) http://listsofjohn.com/index.html

Data for the top prominent peaks for MA were obtained by private communication from Andy Martin who maintains Prominence Front Runners lists http://www.cohp.org/prominence/records.html according to a tentative list established by Roy Schweiker

I have been working on this list very slowly, I got one new peak in 2008 and none in 2009 so even someone starting from scratch could beat me :)

I didn't check the posted list, presumably John will do MA before there's any great herd of finishers :)

Thanks for posting this list. I am interested to see that Monadnock - which gives its name to mountain prominence - is not all that high on the list.

Looks like it's 10th in NH!! Considering it's not even on the NH 100 Highest in terms of elevation, top 10 in prominence is pretty good!

Cool list. Thanks for posting this.

Agreed, nice list.Looks like I'm half way there without knowing about this list. Does anyone know if unnamed pk 2110 West Rutand is on private land?

Thanks dr_wu002, that clears it up.

Now I have a new list to do after the NE115, the Northeast USA 100 most prominent - yay! I am sure my wife will think I am crazy.

Here's couple of other interesting points about prominence lists:

Look at the top 4 peaks on the list:

1 Washington 6148 6288 NH Coos Mount Washington
2 Marcy 4914 5344 NY Essex Mount Marcy
3 Katahdin (Baxter Pk) 4288 5268 ME Piscataquis Mount Katahdin
4 Mansfield (The Chin) 3633 4393 VT Chittenden Mount Mansfield

Notice that each one is in a different state, and in fact each is the highest in each state. That's no accident since as discussed above the highest peak in a given range gets the prominence crown. And since there are very deep valleys between the states (HudsonRiver-LakeChamplain-St.Lawrence, Connecticut, Androscogin-Azizcohos-Magalloway) each state more or less has it's own range

Next look at the next bunch:

5 Lafayette 3320 5240 NH Grafton Franconia
6 Killington 3315 4235 VT Rutland Killington Peak
7 Slide 3280 4180 NY Ulster Peekamoose Mtn
8 Sugarloaf 3160 4240 ME Franklin Sugarloaf Mountain
9 Whiteface 3093 4865 NY Essex Lake Placid
10 Equinox 3040 3840 VT Bennington Manchester
11 Giant 2953 4626 NY Essex Rocky Peak Ridge
12 Jay 2952 3858 VT Orleans Jay Peak
13 Moosilauke 2932 4802 NH Grafton Mount Moosilauke
14 Bigelow (West Pk) 2845 4145 ME Somerset The Horns
15 Carter Dome 2821 4832 NH Coos Carter Dome
16 Dorset 2820 3760 VT Rutland Dorset

Now you're getting the highest peaks in the smaller ranges, and the peaks still jump around from state to state. Franconia Ridge, the lower Green Mountains, Some of the Adirondaks and Catskill ranges, The Taconics, etc. and so it goes. In fact at this high section of the list there's no two peaks in the same state that are adjacent in the list. That's pretty darn cool1

Last point: the list by prominence is unambiguous and depends on nothing else other than prominence. So unlike lists of highest peaks, the list by prominence is always the same no matter where you cut it (except for uncertainties in the maps). So if you started at #1 and worked your way down, you'd be hitting the highest prominent peak in each region and you would work you way down to smaller and smaller regions.

That's one great way to see the country.

Am I interested in getting back into this game? - maybe!

Agreed; very cool list. For those into county high pointing and have been reluctant to cough up the $50 for Croydon (#81), perhaps now one can justify that cost by satisfying two lists. But, watch out for the wild boar on Croydon. Six of New Hampshire's 10 county high points but only 10 of the 48 NH4s appear on the NE 100 prominence list, which supports Papa Bear's keen observation.

Pierre -

As a fellow Prominence aficionado, I thank you for posting the Northeast Hundred Most Prominent list.
It's a noble list, head and shoulders above the several Hundred Highest lists with their 200 and 300 foot col requirements.
I have 81 of the 100 now which means, at my pace, I'll finish long after you do. Maybe even after Roy!
BTW, I believe there are at least 4 finishers of the Northeast 2k Prominence list including Roy, me (john thompson), yourself, and Bob Packard.
And at least 9 have finished the New England "finest fifty" Prominence list; Arthur Josephson, Roy, Richard Garland (Papa Bear), Nate Parsons, yourself, me, Bob Packard, Jim Frey (buckyball1), and John Person.

I'd love to be there for your 770 finish!

jt

Rectification

Have not yet completed Northeast 2K prominence list as I am saving Black Dome for my final 770 (777) peak. Thus should simultaneously complete 8 lists on that long awaited day, including Northeast 100 prominent; but for now it's only a dream at least 6 years away at the rate I am going & provided my health holds out. So Bigmoose you stand a very good chance after all of being #1 finisher of Northeast p100.
