North & South Twin via North Twin Trail and North Twin Spur

Date of Hike: 6-12-10

Trail Conditions: Trails were reasonably firm despite the occasional showers today. Quite a few blowdowns on the ascent of North Twin, but each one was of the easy, “step-over” variety. The major river crossing at the end of the bushwhack really can’t be accomplished by rock hopping…we changed footwear and waded across.

Special Equipment Required: Shell for protection from wet and raw conditions if lingering on open summits. Water sneakers came in handy for crossing the river just before the serious climbing begins. Fortunately the water wasn’t more than calf deep because it was ICE cold.

Comments: A steady rain began as we finished another great breakfast @ Monroe’s in the Town of Twin Mountain….thought the day would be a washout. We pushed on anyway and started the hike up North Twin Trail. The rain tapered off and we barely got touched as we made the climb. Enjoyed some decent views from both N & S Twin….the low hanging clouds beneath us created a spectacular undercast. Bugs were out but didn't bother us too much.

Met a nice group of senior hikers on the N Twin lookout. They had an awesome campsite established right near the river crossing at the end of the bushwhack. They had about 4 bags of food suspended a good 20 feet above the ground…we think a few wine bottles, too.

Also ran into Kevin from MA with his golden lab, Zowie, on the N Twin lookout and chatted for a bit. Kevin – let us know if you’re interested in doing some winter hiking.
