Trails: Gale River, Garfield Ridge, and Frost Trails

Conditions: All trails in good shape with no blowdowns. Some mud. Some minor brushing out still needed. Stream crossings fine - but if you have an older guidebook, be aware that the bridge over the lower crossing washed out several years back, and it is said to be challenging after a heavy rain. Black flies are out in force above ~2,500'.

Equipment: Poles helpful, especially for stream crossings. Deet may be necessary to keep the bugs off. My herbal bug repellent, which has worked very well for me up until this hike, had no effect on these hungry higher-elevation blackflies.
