After highpointing Maryland, it was back in the car for the hour-long drive to Spruce Knob, West Virginia's tallest peak.
Reaching this mountain meant driving by Seneca Rocks, a beautiful vertical rock formation just a few miles from the auto road. Highly recommend going to see it if you're ever in the area.
The road to the top is well-paved and, since it is long, never steep.
Unfortunately, clouds were descending upon us, so we didn't get much of a view on the way up.
The summit parking lot was completely fogged in; I had to use my compass to figure out which way to walk toward the tower (which we couldn't see due to the thick fog).
We finally found the right footpath from the parking lot and entered the trees.
After a five minute walk, we emerged at the site of the lookout tower.
We had a nice view of Cloud at the top.
After we descended, we noticed this sign in the parking lot.
The clouds began to clear during our descent of the auto road.
We camped at Brandywine campgrounds, near the border of Virginia. It was a decent place to spend the evening -- nestled next to a lake, this campground had a beach, showers, laundry facilities, and an amiable host. The girls and I enjoyed our stay.
Next stop: Mt. Rogers (Virginia).
